HI i'm new to electronics and im just sorta getting into led's and stuff like that, i have a idea in mind for a little project and it involves a 'item' with a plug which goes into the wall.

WHat I want to know is is there a way to change that plug that goes into the wall into a plug which i can use in my pc e.g. molex plug? And if yes is it easy ( remember i am new to electronics ) :)

    Thanks!

To answer your question, yes. All you need to do is snip old connector off, strip some insulation off, and either crimp or solder on new connector.

However, it sounds like you want to take something that's supposed to run of AC (coming out of your wall) and run it off of DC (coming out of your power supply). Not going to work for a variety of reasons. The big one being that your mains voltage in NZ is 220v, while the max voltage inside of a PC is +12v. I can't really explain the difference between AC and DC all that well, but I think HowStuffWorks can.

Aaah i see so how you mean changing the plug, just use wire snippers take come off and solder it onto a molex and maybe put heat shrink over that?

As far as the actual power goes, anyone know how I could go about that? Without having a wire going out my comp ?

if you wish you can open the psu and cut the line comming into the psu. (on the other side of the plug) and tie the line into that.

I think, bearing in mind NOMIS's total noobness on this, we're getting into ways to really, really get hurt. :nono:

NOMIS, can you explain a bit more clearly what you're trying to do?

I'll agree with you on that, playing around inside a PSU is something you should only do if you actually know what you are doing, which NOMIS admits he doesn't so I don't think he should try that.

From reading the first post, it seems that NOMIS wants to power a mains voltage 'item' from a molex... which ain't gonna happen.

12/5/7V DC vs 230/110V AC = no go.

You could always drill a little hole in the back of your PC, put a grommet in it, and run the cable out and into the second AC connector on the PSU.

    I won't ask.
