I have a router and a cable connection. That means I have a static IP. I was wondering how I can change my IP address. I've tried changing it from the NIC but thats my LAN/Private IP address given from my router. I know it's possible... I could call them but...too lazy. Someone help (please don't say I have to do it through my router...! Last time I tried it was a disaster..) I could connect one computer straight to the cable modem and do it right? Then I'd have to reconfigure the router a bit... <--will try tomarrow.
you do a release, and then a renew on the router it is usually a dhcp, ie a non static address. If it be static, then call them... sorry mate. those are the only two ways I know. You could try hooking up another computer, but it may screw stuff up. Also, in the router, only click release, then hit renew in a few secs. If you hit clone mac address, the isp may block you. Some ISPs configure ip address by mac address and will only allow you one ip address. have fun
You might find that disconnecting your cable modem for a few hours then reconnecting will force a new IP to be assigned to you, depends if your service works with static ip's assigned to MAC addresses or is based on dynamic ip's thru DHCP. If your service is setup to give each customer a static ip then you're only recourse is to phone your provider and try to convince them to give you a new ip, altho you may need to tell them why you want one.
Ok I figured out the only way to change a static IP is to call and give a good ass reason, OR clone my MAC address and confuse my ISP so it spoof's my mac and gives me a new IP. Muhaha!
I've done that before... I was errr.. ummm... surfing the web a LOT, and by a LOT I mean 80 gigs in 2 weeks but my old ISP had a 6 gig/mo cap... so, I just changed the mac address, and poof, new ip. and bandwidth reset to zero. Then they got graphs that mesure by modem instead of mac... Then, I found out and died off to about 10 gig/s a mo, and then wanted some linux ISOs which took me up to 32 gigs in one week. Thankfully a girl there understood what it was like to get corupted downloads of linux ISOs, and I didn't have to pay 200 bucks And now I don't have to worry about that cause I don't umm.. surf the web so much. /me runs and hides from the bandwidth police
