Hi guys, basically I want to put a larger hardrive into my original 1G ipod, I've found a list of drives that will physically fit inside the 1G case: Drives MK5002MAL 5.0mm ATA 5.0 GB MK1003GAL 5.0mm ATA 10 GB MK1504GAL 5.0mm ATA 15 GB MK2004GAL 5.0mm ATA 20 GB MK2006GAL 5.0mm ATA 20 GB MK2008GAL 5.0mm ATA 20 GB MK3006GAL 5.0mm ATA 30 GB MK3008GAL 5.0mm ATA 30 GB MK4007GAL 5.0mm ATA 40 GB But the problem I face, is that I dont know which drive to choose, lots of people on ebay are selling the MK2004GAL. I've been thinking about buying one, but been reading around the web and cant really find a straight answer as to how to get the drive working in an older ipod. This guy managed to fit his and get it to work (but it freezes his pc when he connects it): http://www.axel-findling.de/ipod.html Someone else I found on the ilounge forums has done the same thing with the 1G ipod and a 30gb drive ( I think ), but he has the same freezing problem aswell. BUT....I have also found that people all over the web have got it to work 100% fine, but cant find out how they did it !? I really dont want to have to connect the drive to a linux machine and do all that stuff as shown in the link I posted above, so if I buy a harddrive that came out of an ipod and fit it into mine, will that bypass all the hassle ? will I still have to totally re-configure the whole drive so that it will work with the 1G firmware etc...or is it just a matter of buying a drive, putting it into the 1G and using the updater tool ? Thanks in advance !
I cannot see any reason why their computer would be freezing or the ipod. However I can say that it is entirely possible to put a larger HDD inside a 1g iPod. The only thing you would need to do to get any HDD working with your iPod is put the iPod into disk mode. once the ipod is in disk mode you simply connect it to your computer and using the ipod updater from within iTunes it will load your iPod with the correct firmware. You cannot connect an HDD from another iPod and have it boot up with the other firmware, each iPod uses different firmware. But no you will not need to use linux to partition the HDD correctly.
THANKYOU ! finally someone who was willing to respond, Ive posted this same thing on about 5 forums and nobody bothered to read it. great help
ok well ive just bought a brand new MK3006GAL 30gb drive on ebay for £53 + £10 p&p from Hong Kong....i'll let you know how it goes ! EDIT - Found This:
Ya I was going to mention that you need to use iPod firmware to gain access via iPod to the HDD. I don't know how but other dude did.
^ yeah, After doing some research I have found out that if you use a non-apple branded toshiba drive then the firewire port will no longer work (not sure why, possibly a hidden piece of code somewhere) and you will have to put the songs on the drive by plugging it into a 1.8" to IDE adapter. So I contacted the guy in Hong Kong to sort me out with a different drive, so that I will be able to put tunes onto the drive while its plugged into the ipod.
isnt there software that alows for you to use the ipod as a mass storage mp3 player with different files and you done have to use itunes, ill see if i can find it for you rockbox i think its called, google it http://www.rockbox.org/
Yeah but the problem is, without an apple branded drive it completely disables the firewire connection. So I would have to put the hard-drive into a USB encloser everytime I want to put music on it.
Id be willing to bet its an issue with the firewire controller on the iPod that causes this. Unlike most firewire IDE controllers which essientially is what the firewire interface for the 1g ipod is. The iPod's interface has a special detector for identifying an apple branded drive. I bet there is a special sector on the drive that acts as a marker so the controller knows it is compatable. I am sure someone could figure out what that sector is and be able to create it on any drive. And the information on the iPod's themselves seems to be quite scarce. Not many people know much about them. I for one know very little and have only dabbled in interfacing both the iPod and its HDD with other devices. In case you have not already found it a good bit of info can be found about the iPod here: http://command-tab.com This is also the site which features the iPod super. I am currently working on another project called IDEpod which is quite similar.
yeah I think you are correct my friend, and thanks for the link, ive checked it out before. But...why do you think not many people know much about the tech side of ipods, they have been around for while now...and Im still failing to find sufficient information about them online.
