I have sourced a (local) IT supplier, who apparently oblivious to the world's mechanical hard drive price explosion, has offered to sell me his stock of 6 brand new Hitachi XL 1000 for £45 each! My question is, does anybody know what drive this enclosure contains? I am in the market for an extra terabyte, as are a few of my friends and family, and I feel perhaps I could make back a few quid selling the surplus drives on eBay. Please don't judge me, I have every sympathy for the poor folks in Thailand but this deal looks too good to be true. Unless they are horrible drives in which case I'll probably just grab one for backups and wait for prices to drop a bit next year.
Yeah my Google-fu is really failing me, so far I've managed to find out what's in the 2TB version but not this one.
According to an Amazon review of the 2TB version, the drive inside is this. Sems like a half decent drive, would be ace if the 1TB version has similar specs.
I got a Seagate one a few weeks ago and ripped out the drive. It's a 5900 rpm model I think, most external drives will probably be around that to reduce noise/heat. If you're using it for storage it should be fine.
Just in case anyne's interested, I went for it, and am now the proud owner of six of these for £240. Opened up the first one and couldn't help a wry smile: Seems a little louder than the Samsung it's sharing the drive bay with, but I'm happy!
Only five caddies sadly, borked the first one trying to get it off I'll keep one, sell three for £50 apiece to the aforementioned friends and family and then stick the last two on eBay. Reckon I can double my money on those (near enough) Might bin the caddies though, they look crappy.
Uhh that's nice. Actually on Finnish HW-forum they now recommend to go buy just about any external drive from the average super market, as those are the slowest to react to the rising prices. Ever since now the prices on those stores have been retarded, but now they are suddenly offering the lowest prices on any desktop drives - and you get an external caddy for free! Thank god I have extra 2 TB drive still on the shelf and an almost empty 3 TB USB3-drive on the desk..
