I need a cheap external sound card for my Macbook. Cheap being less than £50. Im getting annoying hiss and crackling from the internal one. I don't expect it to improve the general quality of the audio just remove the hiss etc.

    Any ideas?

If your MacBook is running Windows, you can have a look at the ASUS Xonar U3.
It will also improve sound quality as well.

Please check reviews first. I don't have this product.

No it isn't, otherwise I would have a lot more options. :(
I should have mentioned it has to be compatible with OSX.

The FiiO E7 seems to be very highly regarded, and looks like it would do what you're looking for, and is mac compatible.

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about these things but isn't that just an amplifier? I'm not too sure it would fix his problem as it'd still be recieveing audio from the internal chip which is giving him problems.

It works as an amplifier and a DAC (connected via USB).

I was going to advise that one too. You can use it as a stand-alone headphone amp ... or a DAC (external sound card for non-audiophile :p). When used as a DAC it works exactly like a USB sound card.

What is nice with external DAC is that you get rid of any electrical noise.

Yeah that is what I am looking for. I get whines, hiss and crackling from my internal one.
I will take a look, thanks.
    Rep all round.
