How little I know about what? You think 80c is good? It pretty much sums up why I no longer use air-cooling. Having bought a 560Ti last year I thought I could live with the air cooler it had but no way. The noise and the heat. So although 80c might seem WONDERFUL to you, to me it is shocking. Regarding 2 x 480 in SLI... Hope you have cheap electricity. Wait for Kepler. Not temped to spend any money on new GPU until Kepler arrives.
80C is astounding for an overclocked GTX480 on air; you obviously aren't familiar with how hot they normally run if you think 80C is poor. And the 560Ti on water vs 480 on air comparison is just dumb...
Currently running @ 850core ,1700 shader and mem 1900. This is one of these refurb cards, i received a Pallit branded on. Running with the VF3000 at near the lowest setting in a P183 currently as i type 31idle and 3Dmark11@73. I dont bother with the heavy benchmarks. The games i run i dont see more than 55c with it and i still get the performance im looking for even with my U2711. It was a real sound investment, a good upgrade from my very capable 5850. It stood me in £200 inc the aftermarket cooler. A really fine card.
Stop hating hater If people want to get lower temps then they should go for it! A GTX480 is around the same preformance of a GTX570 right?
Oh I remember the reviews when the 480 was launched. Louder than a Henry and hotter than my underpants. My own 560Ti's were 83c in summer. I just couldn't bear it. I've just been conditioned to think in water temps over the years. I would love to see the temp drop you'd get on 480 with water though. Which leads to next question... You'd have to buy a full cover block for it as well. Are they still available?
Just running a burn in test on MSI Kombustor (Furmark based) to get temps for my Accelero extreme cooled GTX 480 - will let it run for 10 mins and report back on max temps.
75C peak after 20 minutes of the extreme burn in setting on open gl 3.3 - ambient room temp was 20C - guess the accelero does an excellent job of taming the heat from the card. At £150 plus £50 for a cooler and some serious overclockability you'll be laughing all the way to big frame rates for a long time to come
That's £200, I think I would prefer to keep the default heatsink, save £50 and add extra fans to pull in air towards the GPU. 480 cores still not enough for BF3 on Ultra unless you run SLI then you're talking just over £300 for 960 cores but that is still a lot cheaper than buying 2 x 570.
I beg to differ, my 470 will handle BF3 on Ultra quite well. Even better when I push up the overclock. And I only get 66C load temps and that's under FurMark stress. Though I agree, I'd definitely get two of these if I could.
From my experience you should avoid any refurb graphics cards. Refurb basically means baked, meaning it's only a matter of time before they fail again. I bought a refurb GTX 280 XXX a couple of years back and it lasted about four months before going to pot.
Well that's the thing isn't it... If you read any of the reviews on GPU and BF3 testing... they test single player which is much less demanding. What I suggest you do is set ultra 1080 and play 64 player Firestorm map. What happens is there will be moments where the FPS drops and the game stutters. I have 768 cores and find this on Ultra. From what I can gather it may be due to insufficient graphics memory because it's the ultra texture setting that causes it. Now if you listened to DICE BF3 technical lecture... they also state that on full detail you need seriously powerful graphics and even 2 x 560Ti won't cut it. I only have 1gb GDDR on my 560Ti's so I guess that's part of the problem. BF3 Ultra on 64 player map will need at least 2 x 570 or perhaps 2 x 580. EDIT: I remember a friend of mine telling me he was able to run BF3 Ultra on his 560Ti. When I told him to go back and check on a 64 player map he realised he was living in dreamland. People tend to be over-optimistic about BF3 and their systems. When I setup my 560Ti SLI last year I was sure it would squish BF3 into the ground when it was released. How wrong I was!!!
The folding team should be all over these - that's an 18-20K PPD card for £150. I know a lot of guys are moving away from GPU3 now because of the benefits of more efficient SMP folding, but potentially 40K PPD in a rig with only two cards costing only £300 is still hard to pass up in my books.
480 is faster. I went from a 480 to a 570 and in benchmarks its a drop. Didnt notice too much in games. My 480 3dMark 11 http://3dmark.com/3dm11/1328726 My 570 3dmark 11 http://3dmark.com/3dm11/1447439 With a new cooler on the 480 it was averaging 84c which is good for a 480.
+ Was very tempted to Double up for some 480 SLI action (AM I CrAzY?!?!?!?!) But I think I'll pass, - My experience with refurb cards has been quite negative *cough* Videocardshop *cough* - Heat and Power consumption would be crazy - Kepler a month or so away - Really don't need it at the mo, very few games I can't max at 1920*1200 with one 480, and I'm scaling back my gaming at the mo anyways
I think a good 240 rad should keep temp's at bay. good w-block 240 rad and 1 of them small pump&res combo's...
feathers one 570 @ max detail (no motion blur) on bf3 will not stutter on my system. yes the frames will drop to about 35fps but it does not stutter. two on the other hand overclocked to 900 core it will not drop below 85fps and hits max of 180fps on parts of the maps. depend what people see as playable.
No motion blur... what about AA? Do u disable that? I think I need to do some more ultra testing to find out which setting is causing the stutter. Could be a combination of motion blur and ultra textures. The SLI is working ok cos both GPU are at about 99% usage. You have 1.25gb GDDR yes? So I don't think it's a memory issue because there isn't much difference between that and 1gb.
