I'm looking for more storage as I've started downloading a lot of Videos recently. Anime, Shows for the Kids, Dramas things like that. So I'd like a NAS, but I don't need something stupidly high end, good enough for storage and to play videos from as I watch things both on my PS4 using Plex and on my PC, as well as on my PS3 in the bedroom.

Probably about £150 all in. I don't need absurd drives either, about 2TB of Data or so with room for a second drive if I need it. It also needs to be powerful enough to transcode using Plex as I have a lot of shows with Subtitles.

I'm also open to making my own if it's possible to do so cheaply.

Have you looked at any of the QNAP kit?

It's pretty good value for money :)

If you need it to transcode Plex then you either need a mega expensive NAS with an Intel processor, or you're going to have to build your own.

A quick search says there might be a way to gyp Plex for certain situations but most likely it will give you problems.

I might have to spend a bit more, but Gareth's onto something there. I can find a few cheap ones online; if I get a 2TB drive, i'd probably have to stretch to £200 but it's doable. I'm have trouble finding a powerful Nas for the same price that's powerful enough for the transcoding.

If you need to transcode a NAS isn't really an option, there are products available that will do it but they're stupid expensive.

I picked up a HP micro server for £70 on the bay with 4GB of ram. A decent 2TB drive will set you back £70-80 and a £5 flash drive - sorted.

I can find a few older models for that as well, but they all use older AMD Turions that just aren't powerful enough. I have 1080p videos with Subtitles, that requires transcoding.

I managed to find one of the newer models with a G1610, which is about powerful enough for about £170. For the same price, I can't find a NAS powerful enough.

    Have you bought it?

I only ask because I'm considering selling my Gen8 Microserver.

I just sold my HP N54L Microserver as it struggled on certain HD file transcoding, as a sole NAS it's fantastic.

Built a dedicated box with a an AMD quad core and mATX board but I needed space for 10 HDD's

Have you looked on the Plex site for what NAS boxes you can install Plex on?

Nah not yet. I don't have the money for it quite yet, either. We're due some inheritance soon, so I can get it with a little of that.

With the extra RAM and i5 CPU? the same price - £170

I can even throw in a couple of old 1TB WD greens.
