ok, a mate has just got the gigabyte SLi mobo, the one with the D.P.S. power thing.

since he has a lan in just over a week he needs a really cheap but good performing SLi card, i was thinking x600 levels, this will only be for a few weeks until he gets the $$$ for some better cards

    3500+
    GB K8NSXP SLi
    1gb ddr400 ram

so what do u recommend, this will probly get sold or put into a freinds new system after the lan.

    thnx dman

X300 sounds like a better option.

The Radeon X300 should overclock fairly well, you might be able to get close to X600 Pro performance if you are lucky. :)

I never thought I'd see the day when you recommended an X300 :hehe:

In the £40-50-60 price bracket there isn't a lot... depends whether you want to try a 6200 TurboCache out for fun. I don't personally think that is quite as effective as an X300 if you can get the X300 at the right price.

It would also depend whether you were considering DOOM 3 on it or not...

Give this a read, should give you an idea: http://bit-tech.net/review/390/3

I talk a lot about value in the conclusion too.

Edit: the 6200 TurboCache would be a little faster with 1GB of memory, notice I tested with a very 'entry level' system:

    Pseudo 3000+ & 512MB RAM

I'm assuming when you say "SLi card" you mean "PCI Express card".

Because the only SLi(-capable) cards are 6600GTs, 6800GTs, and 6800 Ultras AFAIK.

If it's a temp solution, either the x300 or 6200TC would probably work. Not work well, but work.

I'd look at the one supporting 256MB probably :)

The X300 is truely truely crap for gaming though, unless they wanna play HL2.

If you want an SLI card then your only option is the 6600GT in the "bargain" area.

Why not just save some money and buy a nice card instead of a crappy card, then getting a nice card

Why? An x300 can't make use of that much ram... it just doesn't have the pixel pushing power. Like my friend's FX5200/128 except even more so.

well afaik the pretty much make them with 256mb ram soo n00bs buy them thinking they are good as they have double than some the others also most n00bs dont realy loook as what series or anything if they saw a 6800gt with 128mb ram and a 9600 with 256mb of ram at the same price they would go for the 9600 straight offf :hehe:

people pay near double for the unused and slower ram at the low end gfx cards :eyebrow:

Because it's got more local memory, thus will be faster. When you are sharing a lot of system memory, the more local memory there is, the better, in most cases.

There's a difference between 128MB of local frame buffer and 128MB of shared frame buffer IMHO.
