My little sister's birthday is coming up, and I would really like to get her an mp3 player of some sort, but I am having difficulty finding a decent one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Basically the only requirements are that it doesn't cost much and has some sort of memory expansion slot (SD, CF, does not really matter).

    Any thoughts/ideas?

That would work, but something that uses flash memory or something like that would be nice ;)

    why?
all flash based mp3 players suck.
hold nothing, and you still must tranfsfer everything.
if you dont want an ipod, get an mp3 playing cd player and some cd-r's.
    best way.

    personally, i like my ipod.

Well, I'm kind of looking for a "average joe" solution here, something that doesn't require a whole lot of brains to figure out, while not costing an arm and a leg like the ipods do (plus there is the fact that itunes sucks, but what can you expect, apple made it :p ).

I'd love a little thing that took like sd cards and just played mp3s off them.

In this case, cheap = less than $100.

How about the Creative muvo series? the 128mb one is ~ 50 GBP now (~75USD) Uses USB, and can act as a memory stick as well. Not bad sound quality either. The newer NX version has a screen and graphic equiliser too :)

I'd reccomend the MuVo series as well, Good little player, very easy to use, even my mum can use it, and she can't even turn on a computer :eyebrow: Took me over half an hour just to tell her how to type in a password so my sis could use the comp, and the box was on the screen :hehe:

Yeah I had a MuVo (Until I leant on it whilst it was plugged in and broke it :wallbash: ) - It was pretty good. Sound quality is much better than the cheapo 256MB MuVo rip-off I have now.

 How many types of Muvo is there then? Are these CF players or is the memory just built in. I've really let all this MP3 player craze pass me by!

There's a couple of types, one's a 4GB version about the size of a MD player. The original one is just a USB thing with 64,128,256 (or 512?) MB of memory. No removable memory... But I don't think many have removable memory these days.

Iirc, a short while back , people were buying the 4gig ones, taking out the microdrive (CF slot), using/selling it, and putting a 512 CF card in the player.

CHeck somewhere else incase im wrong, but its worth doing if im right ;)

Actually I did some research about extracting the muvo's microdrive, and it appears they have made it so you can no longer use it in other devices, which is a shame really :(

(I was thinking I could buy it and use the cf card in a pda, then put a smaller cf card in it for mp3s)

I ended up getting a Rio s35s for my sister, nothing extra great, but hopefully she will appreciate it ;)

    Cheers for the advice :thumb:
