Can anybody help me? I'm looking for a quiet PSU (120mm fan), that is cheap (~£50) and ideally I would like it to be modular.

Can anybody suggest anything to me?

    Thanks

Probably something like a Hiper Type R - it's OK, not as good as the Corsair 520 but it's a lot cheaper.

I was looking at the Hiper Type R, but i'd really like something a little cheaper! I dont need all those Watts, and i'm already over budget on my new build... :sigh:

If you want a decent PSU that isn't too expensive buy something like a seasonic 330W PSU. You can pick them up for under £40. It's not modular, but you're not going to find a decent quiet PSU that's modular and rated at a low wattage. Modular PSU's tend to start at 500W.

I figured that might be the case, since my hunting hadnt shown one up...
Just out of interest, can anyone say how much wattage i'd need of a q6600, GeForce 8800GTS, couple of HDD's and a dvd writer?
    Is 330W gonna be enough?!

You'll need more than 330W for that, 480W's probably about right imo.

To be honest I'd just suggest splashing out on a Corsair HX520 - they're a great PSU.

Were it a dualcore system I'd say 380 would be sufficient easily. With quad though, I'm not so sure.

I don't know why you're buying such a high end system and skimping on the PSU. Seems incredibly stupid to me.

I didn't find mine to be particularly quiet. It also doesn't have a ton of amperage on the +12v rail. I wouldn't trust it with a Q6600 and an 8800GTS.

For the Q6600 and 8800GTS, it probubly wouldn't be best.

Unlikely. It would be Enough, but that would be running it at full load. You know what happens when you run Anything at full load for extended periods of time. You need headroom.

A great choice, but out of his pricerange.

    Exactly

They seem to have quality control issues where they die right after your 1 year warranty period is up. Plus, they're Very expensive for what you get. Not recommended.

The Hiper Type R is built by andyson. In other words, it's decent quality. Except for the use of Fuhjyyu capacitors, the lack of 12v amperage (not a quality issue), and the overemphesis on bling.

I suggest the Corsair HX 520 (Modular, 520w, 40a, roughly $100) or the Enhance ENP-5150GH (non-modular, 36a, $69 at ewiz.com). Either of those should be more than enough for Quad core and 8800gts.

Now that I know the spec he's powering; agreed. Corsair HX520 is by far the best option I agree, but still out his pricerange. IMO the OP should extend his pricerange to cover the HX520 given the quality of the other components going in there.

I wasn't really referring the the Hyper being cheap in quality, but the fact that he wanted something cheap at all in the first place. There simply aren't good PSU's that are cheap, you get what you pay for.
'Good tattoo's aren't cheap.....Cheap tattoo's aren't good' Just one more analogy. Buying something because it's a good price only hurts you in the long run.

Mine has always been quiet but I do agree that it would be borderline with a Q6600 & an 8800GTS.
I did suggest though that the Corsair would be better albeit dearer
