It's a collaborative piece with a friend of mine and is a dark and visceral throwback to classic 80s body-horror type stuff. No CGI plz. It's called Sonorous and it'd be great to get some feedback. Have a look! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVmfsE8uBd8
Quite entertaining, man! Very Lovecraftian in subject matter. I really dug the headphones fusing to the ears, hahaha. Oatmeal puke's a nice touch too! Very good SFX for such a small budget too (assuming as much). The stark silouette of the character at the top of the stairs while his arm separates was a great comicbook-inspired shot. Probably the lowest point would be the use of DV for shooting (I'm assuming). I don't mean that in a bad way. It's a great way for budding filmmakers to get some stuff out there, definitely. IMHO, I'd love to see you get a hold of a 16mm/35mm cam and reshoot the thing. Some light filmgrain and perhaps different optical filters would probably add to the desolate feel of the it. Listening to mainstream music has a similar effect on my ears... But why push the chick down the stairs? That just seems like a waste of a perfectly good hot British babe to me! Good stuff!
Wow, some really constructive criticism here. Thanks a lot man! Funny you should mention Lovecraft, because our original idea was to actually just adapt a Lovecraft piece to a contemporary setting, but we canned it early on. If by small budget you mean no budget, then yeah, it was the main focus. We know the story is quite trite and very archetypal of the genre, the film was more for us to get our teeth stuck into the craft. I'm not sure Youtube's always the best way to get film quality across. We actually shot it on HDV on a Canon-XLH1 and the quality is pretty damn good at 1080p on my 40" Samsung. Even the SD version we output looks great, certainly broadcast-able. Although I do completely understand what you're getting at though, as I completely agree! We initially toyed with shooting on film, but neither of us have the experience or equipment and seeing as it was for university it wasn't something we could wait around on. Again, thanks for the feedback mate. Very much appreciated.
There's a guy hoovering! I didn't realise it was a fantasy. Jokes! Nah, that's excellent stuff dude. Reminded me quite a lot of Tetsuo: The Iron Man - take that how you will. I loved the bits dropping off and the extra limbs. Very cool.
Hahaha the glue-ear bit was lush! I must show this to the missus as a dire warning against men hoovering. It totally reminded me of a film I did at uni many, many years ago on good old S-VHS (oh how times change...). We did a version of the Edgar Allen Poe short story The Tell Tale Heart. Nasty hammer murder and mutilation. What a great way to spend your life - looks like you're having a right good giggle too.
Right on the money mate. We're both huge fans and referenced it loads in our proposal film. Shame we never got time to try some crazy stop-motion stuff though. Thanks!
shame you didnt use a crazy drill-cock either that aside, it was a good short film, fun music too. i took the time to check out the others too, i liked the man who lost his car. (there was a bit of music in that one that was very 28 days later, was it stolen from it, or the same guy, or just something else?).
Ah yes, that was another fun film. It actually had the stipulation that the entire thing had to be made in-camera, so it was a bit of a challenge. The dubbing on the camera sucked so we ended up adding the music in Final Cut though. Do you mean the second song? That's Red Sparowes, epic post-rock stuff similar to the likes of Godspeed You Black Emperor! used in 28 Days Later. Good stuff. Thanks for all the great feedback guys. Really appreciate it!
Awesome video. A bit of a shame that the sound was clipping during some of the louder scenes. I think perhaps E.E.L. Ambiense was referring to the shakyness/light senstivity etc of your camera, rather than the picture quality. It is very impressive though. That bit where he gets stabbed in the ear.... wow.
what can I say but Wow!! the song very aphex twin(ny), the setting dark, all I guess I can really comment on is what E.E.L. Ambiense mentioned is that I would have loved to have seen this shot on a 35mm as I think it would look even better a bit grainy. the empty house, whilste a bit too tidy/minimalist for my looking, is the perfect setting!
Wow. Thank you so much for all the kind words everyone. Some really good feedback in here. We're presenting it at university tomorrow I think, which is a bit nerve-racking. We've both got separate films lined up for our final projects. Not sure what Ed's is about yet, but I've got a good idea about mine using the same actor again. Very French new wave cum Wes Anderson.
