Somehow I'm picturing you typing this from a well-aged leather Chesterfield armchair on an ancient Persian rug, in front of a gently crackling fireplace, with a mahogany side table supporting a case of good cigars and a honeyed cognac in a fine crystal balloon snifter. :)

Last time we went to the Loire, a lovely old French lady would visit the Gite to deliver a fresh selection of Goat's Cheese from the back of her trusty Peugeot 406 every couple of days. It was simply the finest Goat's cheese I have eaten in years - combined with some great wine we'd been buying direct from vineyards...

We had some of that once, the fridge had to be emptied and bleached several times to remove most of the all pervasive odour, it never completely went away. I suspect napalm or thermite would probably be the only things guaranteed to work.

I do have two cheeses local to me I'd recommend trying if you see them - Cote Hill Yellow which is very creamy with a nice hint of sharpness and Lincolnshire Poacher which has a good, strong flavour but doesn't take the skin off your tongue. I wouldn't call either of them particularly special, just very pleasant.

If you like stilton, try some Long Clawson. It's pungent yet smooth.

Had some lovely stilton today with a glass of port. Both from Aldi's Christmas range and absolutely divine!

That's probably the one. Aldi sells the Long Clawson stuff. It's really good. And Aldi's cheap port at around £6,-- a bottle is outstanding for the price.

Something else Aldi worth picking up is the a Cremant de Jura - best sub £10 bottle of fizz in the country.

Oh yes. And having just performed exhaustive testing of three sub £10,-- bottles of champagne from Aldi, Asda and Lidl, I can confirm that the Aldi one tastes best (biscuity and rich) closely followed by the Lidl one (dry with a nice finish) with the Asda one coming a distant third (nice enough but bland).

Jarlsberg is pretty damn good, my friend always has a rather good selection of cheese around christmas too so I always enjoy going to his house. He had a lovely garlic Chedder early in the week.
