If the laptop was on when the grandson from Hell perpetrated his nefarious deed, I'd say the chances of rescuing the laptop are close to zero. If it was off, you might still be in with a slim chance. Give the rice trick a go, leave it for a couple of days and see how you get on.

Otherwise, take out the hard drive, and see whether the insurance will cover the accident.

Hard drive might be saveable because it's a sealed unit, as long as the controller board didn't get fried. I'd say everything else is probably FUBAR.

    Call the insurance people.

If something like this happens, separate everything out as much as possible and turn it off as quick as you can, such as remove battery and hdd if they are accessible.
After that, as someone has said, rice is a good idea and a warm place (radiator may not be the best idea).

I usually leave it 48 hrs and only then turn it on.

Windows 7: probably not but tech support might not be the same, due to not using the recommended OS, much like installing linux.
RAM: possibly, but usually only if you have to rip off a warranty void if removed sticker, which is only usually for access to the whole mobo, not just the ram slots.

ram wont affect warranty, unless you had to strip it to get it in, it's the same old, designed to be upgradeable argument, one thing to check is that the ram is on the compatibility list

do try the rice thing. i went "swimming" (drunk, on a stag do, in Bristol. ended up having a wrestling match in the fountain with the Groom) with my Samsung Galaxy S in my pocket.

phone was borked. put it in a bowl of rice for the duration of the weekend. when i got home i charged it and it fired up to my surprise. it worked for a week then gave up. but i was able to get my stuff off of it before sending it off under insurance

Diassembly that laptop and clean MBO,RAM and HDD with 70 % alcohol or acetone. That will prevent rusting and will clean all water marks. After you clean it,wait for 1-2 hours and try to turn it on.

I doubt water damage will be covered under the manufacturer's warranty, which is why I suggested going down the insurance route instead. If you try to disassemble the laptop like Pranja said, you'll definitely void the warranty, and will probably also get some raised eyebrows from the insurance company - but taking the extra RAM and the hard drive out will probably be OK.

If you have accidental damage on your home insurance that should cover it. Also, if you've got like for like replacement that can end up working out quite well...
