i am replacing my 2 OCZ DDR2 PC2-5300 1GB RAM cards with 2x 2GB cards. however im having a hard time determining which brand card to choose. and i want to know (if im right about this) that as the numbers go lower "5-5-5-15" the faster the transfer, i heard this somewhere but i forgot where. am i correct or do these numbers correspond with something else? and any suggestions on what RAM cards to get that are 2GB (getting 2 of the same)? System: Windows XP 32 bit ASUS M2NPV-VM mobo: up to 8GB, 4 slots NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT 256MB graphics card AMD Athlon 64+ X2 4200+ (which im upgrading to AMD Athlon 64+ X2 5200)
The timings you listed are the various latencies of the RAM and while they do relate to the speed, the RAM bandwidth itself (in MHz) also affects transfer. Your motherboard can only take up to 800MHz in RAM bandwidth, so try to find some with decent latency (the numbers...). If you go with any of the decent memory manufacturers (Corsair, OCZ, Kingston, Patriot, GSkill, etc) and buy above the basic model at 800MHz you should be pretty set. Bear in mind you will not be able to utilise all the RAM you purchase due to the limits on memory of 32bit OS.
For example, 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, DHX @ £58 But £40 will get you 5-5-5-18 and you may see very little real-life difference.
alright thanks guys. but i want to make sure of one more thing, does the voltage also affect the performance of the RAM? cause i want to make sure i choose the right RAM card that will work at the motherboards voltage, which is 1.8V.
This is the QVL for that board. However, as said earlier, any good memory should work. Not sure where you located, but if your in the US you can purchase the OCZ 4gb kit of pc2-6400 800mhz 5-6-6-15 for $59.99 US.
glad you posted that ocz ram. Im currently running 8gb of that ram and its great. when running at 4gb i could set my timings to 4-3-3-10 2T but at 8gb i have them set to 5-4-4-10 2T and 856mhz. Great value for the ram so personally id pick it up unless you can find some gold edition cheaper.
