Hey all, So I'm in the process of setting someone up with a new computer and accessories, and I've run into a spotty issue - a choppy optical mouse. Specifially, it's a Logitech LX3, but I don't think it's a hardware problem as the mouse works just fine on my rig. When I unboxed the notebook I plugged the mouse in to test it, and it worked fine. But now, after removing all the crapware and installing the essentials, it's like chop suey. Any idea what kind of software conflict could be causing such an issue? Best, E Edit: Running Vista btw.
HP has A LOT, perhaps a world record of crap installed. I suggest to re-install l Vista with a real copy of Vista, and put the computer product key instead. It's ok if you don't have the same edition, as all the disks (even OEM and retail) are the same. The product key decide which version to install. You can even install Vista 64-bit on your way.
The frustrating thing is, it worked just fine BEFORE all the crapware was uninstalled and I hadn't used the mouse since the first time I plugged it in for testing purposes. Reinstalling Vista is really a last resort, as this is paid work, and I've already put quite abit of time getting it to the state it's in now. I don't currently have it with me either, it's with the new owner until tomorrow.
I sometimes find I get quite different performance out of different USB ports - try plugging into another port. Also try uninstalling the driver in device manager and then rebooting, it should then reinstall the driver on restart for you.
Tried all the ports, neither made a difference. When you say the driver, do you mean the default HID driver? Because afaik, there is no dedicated logitech mouse driver.
Have you installed all the windows updates? And if there's any wifi built-in/installed - what make is it? I had a Belkin stick that, as soon as it was installed, gave really choppy mouse tracking. A windows update mostly sorted it. Another culprit was the EA Downloader - having that running caused my G7 to lose itself and I'd have to keep re-plugging the usb receiver in to get it to work again. Have you also downloaded updates for the HP Updater? There was a known bug where it could be compromised but I think it's since been fixed with an update to itself.
Vista re-installation is about 20-25min, + 10-15min (depending on Microsoft servers and your internet connection). Anyway, All Logitech mouse had drivers included in the mouse. Mouseware (not really XP SP2 (from my taste) and Vista compatible) or SetPoint is the just a stupid software to add more options to your device (unless you have a mouse with extra buttons which you need to configure). Usually SetPoint (which is what Logitech uses for all their "new" (quiet old now)) is what they use for their keyboards and mouses.
Aha, that might just be the issue right there! The wifi is integrated, I'll look into the hardware tomorrow, but there is a good chance that's what it is. I've only used the mouse on two occasions: first, right out of the box, no wifi - and the second, after getting the router/modem combo up and running to test it out. Haven't bothered with the HP updater, and (sadly) the EA Downloader is not something most 84 year old women dig. This whole exercise has really been a test of my patience when it comes down to explaining the most rudimentary things, good skill to build on I suppose. Thanks alot Kenco, tomorrow I'll have a look and report on my findings.
