Some guy has started a project called Ubuntu: Christian Edition, which looks pretty promising. It is simply Ubuntu with Christian apps installed by default, such as web filters, bible software, and stuff like that.

All thinks you can do with Ubuntu out of the box, but pre-configured so you don't have to.

The website is at http://www.christianubuntu.com and the forums are housed on a new project Arthur2Sheds started called ChurchForge.

Kind of interesting IMO, I can't wait to see how it develops.

How many Linux geeks actually believe in a God then?

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, there are 2.1Bn Christians in the world, if we can get some more of 'em into OSS then great. On the other...I dislike religion and anything that promotes it, and using OSS to do so makes me uneasy.

I find it quite useless... Wouldn't use it for the world :) But, as allways, it's good that someone invests time into OSS, and the spreading of OSS...

Spread the word, and god be with thou (I hope that was right...)

    Christian Ubuntu¬
    WTF??

Why would these christians need web filters?
Incase they accidentally stray to nakedchoirboys.com??

Well, live & let live I suppose.
    Doesn't mean I can't LMAO @ this though! :D

Personally, I have no problem with a "christian" Ubuntu, but I can't help but feel that all these different distros which are only differentiated based on the apps they have installed is just a waste.

I mean, why not just create a script that apt-get installs all the good stuff? Doesn't this just serve to divide the community (in this case Ubuntu)?

Well, to clarify, the reason I would like it, is instead of going to a church member and saying, "Hey, you can install Ubuntu linux on your computer, then set up networking (if it doesn't work out of the box), then apt-get install my Christian Edition script, and follow the on-screen instructions"

I could say something more like:
"Hey, try out this live CD, and if you like it, install it."

As for the "accidentally going to" comment, I made a website for a not-for-profit organization, and it was one of the better sites I have done. I went there to check if they kept my design so I could use it in a portfolio, but apparently, they didn't renew their domain, and someone bought it to advertise porn.

The Porn industry is surprisingly pushy if you don't want to see any of it. With all of the pop-ups, malware, and phishing sites out there, you can't tell me it is unlikely to "accidentally" go to a porn site.

In response to whether or not that many linux users believed in a god, well, I'll tell you the answer to that once this gets popular!

But yes, once again, this could be an awesome tool to get more people on linux. As for religion, I'm assuming "Christian", which according to our own bible, we should be focusing on the love Christ shared, not religious actions and pious snobbery. A true Christian would die for what they believe, but never kill for it.

Then again, I have my own personal beliefs that Christians shouldn't base their beliefs on anything but God's word (the bible), which for me rules out any religious acts or symbols. (My church doesn't even have crosses in it, since that's just a religious symbol...)

But, that's neither here nor there, I was just mentioning that this product is out there if anyone is interested. If you don't share the same beliefs of Christianity, I'd reccomend you not worry about this, especially if you ever use the argument "If it offends you, change the channel".

    Web filters?

What do they filter out? Muslim websites?

This whole thing's really quite weird... :blah:

After reading your reply oneseventeen I have to say I wish all religious types were more like you.
I think we'd have far less wars and atrocities if they were.

It seems I probably share a lot of the same beliefs as you but not due to any religion, just due to good parenting and good morals. :)

ElThomsono: The idea is to filter out what most Christians consider offensive, or content that could be harmful to a Christ-Centered lifestyle. Primarily overly coarse language and nudity/pornography.

The bible is clearly against pornography, and simply viewing it can easily numb a Christian in their personal relationship with Christ. Because of this, many Christians would prefer not to have to worry about it.

Viewing muslim information is not against the Bible in any way. I have Muslim, Jewish, and Athiest friends. As I said before, the Bible is clearly about loving one another. In fact, Jesus loves porn stars.

If I were not allowed to view information about another religion, I would be mighty suspicious about the validity of my own beliefs, hence why I, as a Christian, own a Qur'an. Reading other religious texts firms my beliefs in the Bible, and while I wouldn't reccomend new Christians reading non-Biblically founded texts, I don't see the harm in researching other religions with an open mind and with prayerful consideration. (then again, I could be wrong, I'm not perfect... nobody is)

Hope I'm not sounding preachy... if I am, just lemme know and I'll kindly ignore you and tell you you are going to hell.... oh wait, no I won't, but it would be funny, annoying, and against the principles of Christianity if I did!

OneSeventeen, this is off topic so you'll have to forgive me(I've read your book, I know you have to forgive me, buwahahah!).

But seriously, the world needs more religious people like you. I'm generally pretty down on religious folks, but I certainly think if more religious people were like you and not crazy "You going to hell" maniacs the world would be a better place :)

For those that get offened by Christians. Don't read this post!

Talking about religion. Since when is God religion? And wait Christains are not a bunch of wimps. If you think soso get that out of yer skull and catch a grip of yer self! I'm a Christain and I'll stand up for what I beleive in. If people think they've got the right to mock, then you'd better beleive that I'm going to stand for who I beleive in. I'm not talking about religion. I'm talking about my belief in God and my relationship with Him!
You may think there is no God, and certainly not a loving God by experiencing religion, I have experienced religion too. No I don't mean a wishy washy God, or a God for religious hypocrites, but a God that would die on the cross for you and me, to save us from our sin and make us pure as we should be. We can't sanctify oursevles. So don't even act like you can earn heaven cos you can't. I'm in Bible college because I want to know about God through His word and most of my class is full of ex druggies and alcoholic's that turned to Christ. God chaged them all totally. One of my good friends has turned to God recently after being involved, in fights with police living under a bridge for 6 months, he's been a druggie and alcoholic too as well as being in stacks of fights. Now God alone has transformed Him and his past is history.

I think this linux filter is excellent for people trying to inprove their relationship with God and get rid of pure garbage that ruins lives and relationships. Let people get on with what they want to do.
Weird, I don't think so! What is wierd when people have access to sick porn, sucicde sites and satanic & witchcraft sites!

Do you think that God dosen't want us to enjoy life? No, He wants it to be better in terms of protecting ALL our minds to stop us corrupting ourselves.

You think that Christains that are too good not to be tempted by porn. RUBBISH! Hence the filters! We are only human and we all sin, but we have to live with that and realise that God cannot accept sin, but He will accept uanyone who come to Him, gay, murders, druggies or whatever and make us Holy. He has the power to change those who come to Him if they repent, they don't have such power.

And if people don't like what I've said they, then get someone to take this post off, or go and realise that reason you get offended is just maybe rings true a little!

Go and ask God if He's real and you'll soon find out. Religion wont help you get to know Him.
Athiests think about this. A shoe, someone must have made the shoe, a car, someone must have made the car, a computer, a tv. Someone must have made that too. Hmm the earth? Well it just must have made itself?!? Yeah right!!! GOD.

I'm not sorry if I've offended anyone. Go and tell God about it sincerly and then you'll no what I'm talkin about. Either way, someday you will speak with the God who created you and you'll wonder why you botherd mocking Christainity.
As for Muslims. God loves them too and many that don't care about religion, but want to know Him experiecne Him too. I'll get you in contact with Muslims who are people like you and me and they'll let you know what God did for them. Remember something. Regardless of what religion you are or how much you hate it, there is still a God who wants to know you personally and give you a better life. The sad thing is that many people will keep mocking until it's too late for them,

    Gareth

I am sorry for sounding so angry though, but it gets to me when religion ruins peoples relationship with a powerful God who IS real. I have also read the Koran and studied Islam, I live talked to many Jews also and seen God heal them from sickness and get to know Him. I think that all these guyys are great. Muslims and Jews and all you guys on the forums are super people. I would tell all of you about how God cares for them, but maybe noone might listen to me. I'll not froce God on anyone. All I am saying is that religion will get you nowhere, but God will! He loves you and thats the truth, why not ask Him!?!

Can we please not turn this into a discussion about the pros and cons of a belief system and keep it to the pros and cons of a Christian belief based OS.

    Thanks.
