In our family we just get what we want all year long. The lady/wife Marilyn has come up with an idea .We have have not done this since the 70s. Put all 6 of our names into a hat and draw one name - $50USD limit. The rules she specified are simple 1.) Must be a wrapped present and 2.) cannot be a gift card. All year long we buy eeePCs - we have 4 and laptops -everyone has at least one - Plasma and HD TVs 1080 for all. We have WIIs and I think 3 or 4 xbox360s with online, PS3s a pair and we all have at least one desktop PC - I have 4 live ones currently. Now the challenge is to buy within the $ limit and wrap them and put them under the tree. Like a scavenger hunt ( do they have them in Europe?). This will be the funnest Christmas in ages. Nobody knows what anybody is getting. Does anyone else do this in their families? john
Is this like Secret Santa? or is it a present free-for-all? My family does "Secret Santa" for all the extended family members (uncles, aunts, cousins, etc) every year - you pick and name from a hat, and have to buy that person a gift, no-one knows who's buying for who. It always turns into an underhanded mystery novel as everyone tries to figure out who's buying for who.
Yep, just like that. Secret Santa. Gifts with no givers of record. Kind of like "How well do you know me and my likes". Sounds pretty cool. Last year we got the normal WIIs and we got a house for my stepson and my granddaughter. Everybody knew what they were getting. Different this year. Sounds challenging. Especially with the $50USD limit. Creativity abounds here, I think. john
I just browse notcot and look for weird stuff. I got my dad a cake slice shaped like a saw. He luuuurves cake
sounds like you guys have an awful load of stuff (laptops, consoles, desktop pcs each?) hope the kids don't become spoilt
It is one's duty after almost 6 decades on the planet to spoil others! Daily, weekly, monthly don't count. This is once a year and Top Secret stuff. This will be fun! john
Yeah, my uncles picked up a rock off the road of somewhere in Scottland (they live in Scottland so it's not like it's exotic) and wrapped it up and gave it to her as a gift. Apparently she was really pleased with it.
You can get these great gift boxes... It's just an empty box with a funny gag you can do and put whatever you want inside. http://store.theonion.com/cards--gift-boxes-c-21.html http://www.metacafe.com/watch/979265/usb_toaster_real_or_fake/

I want those magnets! edit: THANKS so much for that Core77 link mate! You just polished off the rest of my Christmas shopping!
We're wiring up my coworker's minivan with Christmas lights. Gotta get the reaction from local traffic law enforcement. As far as family goes, maybe an informal "Oh yoyo here's your gift GTFO."
