So the mrs has ordered me to find a good premium cig lighter for her dads birthday . now I don't smoke never have done and know nowt lighters apart from the fact 50p ones from the corner shop are no good apparently. So I need suggestions please she has set a budget of around £100 or so.
I have a Zippo black chrome which was about £25 a few years ago, its a lovely piece of kit, that is a wind proof design from over 100 years ago. Thats the traditional snap head lighter that you see in films. Like this You get a nice broad flame off one of these, and its very nice in the pocket as well. Spoken as a non smoker that used it for lighting fire poi.
I have no idea as i have never bought from them but i am sure you can find this elsewhere or buy from a shop in london
get him an engraved zippo. be about £30 but excellent quality with a lifetime guarantee. They have an unmistakably satisfying click open/snap shut sound and feel too.
That Ronson is a beauty. I own a few similar lighters (found on fleamarkets etc, people don't know the value of these things, so you find them barely used for a few euro's. I used to collect those things). Some of them are not refillable, but use cartridges (expensive and hard to find), so look out for that. Some shops offer custom engravements in Zippo's, so maybe that's a nice idea too. On the other hand, some people are able to taste the petrol (or so they say), so if your dad-in-law smokes for the 'taste' (cigars), a zippo is maybe something to avoid. If you look around, you'll see a lot of so called 'windproof' or 'jetflame' lighters. Those are nice, but burn hard. I've seen people burn away a thirth of their cigarette with being clumsy to light it. Some people like the thought of a neverdying flame, other people are agile enough to turn around until their back shields the wind. If there are any tobacco shops around, go have a look, usually they have a selection of lighters too, sometimes even the 'better' (more expensive) ones.
Just get a custom engraved Zippo, but let him decide on the engraving I'd say. You can't beat a lifetime guarantee, I believe you can still send it to the factory and they'll repair it for free.
as a former smoker (pack a day for about 10 years), I would use this man's advice: I used to HATE Zippos, and only ever used them for decoration. The petrol is quite tasteable, and I'd use matches (yuck as well) before a Zippo. Those jet flame lighters need another bit of caution: they eat butane for breakfast, lunch and dinner... and a few times in between... I had a few, and they all let me down when I most "needed" their services. So: gas driven, and preferably classic looking... that ronson looks good.
Looks like she is setting for the Ronson 50th anniversary. Tho having looked at other lighters had no idea how much some go for. Amazing how it's ok for women to splash out or over spend on stuff tho. Think the silver one with the hold trimmings look best despite being £46 cheaper
Never light a cigar with a Zippo, the gas will scrap the aroma. You light a cigar with wooden matches or a Butane lighter (I'd consider a St.Dupont butane).
I would also take in to account what you are trying to light there are different lighters for smoking pipe, cigars, or cigarets. So just keep that in mind. 20+ year recently quit smoker
When I was a smoker I would have taken a box Bic lighters above other fancy lighters. They always worked and seemed to have a never ending fuel supply.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1970-s-Du...A%2BFICS%2BUFI&otn=21&pmod=221212332667&ps=54 I inherited a solid gold dunhill lighter, very heavy, nice gas lighter, above is an example, they are around on ebay from 50 - 100 notes for gold plated, and are very nice cig lighters. Is much nicer than any of the 9 Zippos I have. photo and ebay auction aren't mine, just an example. Mine isn't for sale
Being a pyromaniac myself, I've always wanted a miniature blow torch lighter, but chances are I'd only end up burning down my flat so have forbidden myself from getting one... An engraved lighter that runs from Butane would be best really for your ladies Dad, less faffing than the petrol lighters.
Well ordered from the backy site, they have small store not far from me but they didn't have it in stock so ordered through the site. Saw a really old bloke buying a pouch of bacco gave it a gigantic sniff then gobbed some of it in his mouth on the way out, forgot chewing tobacco existed.
