For my current project (my first), I need some help. I am going to use 2 stepper motors to lift my case up for a reason I will post later when I get my project thread started. I plan to use a Allen Bradley PICO PLC, which I already have, to tell the motor to go forward and reverse, when told to. The ouput of the plc can be any DC voltage. I have a 24V DC power supply, but I think I will make a voltage divider circuit.

The outputs will be relay outputs Q1 and Q2 off of the PLC.

    Here is the motor:

and the controller IC that I need a circuit for:

I was going to use linear actuators, but they are very expensive!

So what's your "circuit help?" question, or was that just to lure unsuspecting e-tron guru's into your thread?

I need help with the circuit design for the controller

Also, the controller says its for 5VDC and the motors are 12VDC. Would that be a problem?

I am planning to use 1 controller for 2 motors.

    Simple stepper driver circuits....

    http://www.robotstore.com/catalog/list.asp?cid=17

    http://www.oatleyelectronics.com/kits/k142.html

If a stepper is what you decide on, you might want to look at CNC kit and parts sources. Tons of em.
    http://www.ktmarketing.com/CNC.html

Lots of valuable info on CNC construction that might apply to your project.

Decent torque and precision 3 axis stepper kits start around $300.
    http://www.maxnc.com/page5.html
I have used this particular MAXNC 3 axis system ($295) for several motion projects and I also own a MAXNC 10 CNC, good company. This particular kit would adapt easily to control signals from a PLC, PIC etc.

If you don't need absolute precision, an AC or DC linear actuator with limit switches might be an easier approach.

If you need heavy duty, do heavy duty up front. Don't underestimate your load requirements.

that is actually a bit too much. precision control is not that crucial.

Found some good matches for actuators on Ebay

Here is a couple good surplus dc units

general robotics and good gear assemblies

Look locally for surplus or scraped out C-Band satellite dishes, as some had DC actuators. Another idea is build your own linear actuator from a reversable drill.
