Good update. Have they fixed the dead people problem though? My population is too small to tell...

Everyone started getting sick in my city, 1/3 of the population and hospitals couldn't cope, but thinking that it was the dead people issue I just let it happen.

Turns out I was poisoning the water supply with an early water tower that I forgot about... my bad!

I'm starting to feel the burn of traffic now though. My first city ground to a complete halt as soon as I starting zoning for high density, so rather than demolish basically everything I thought I would start again with the lessons I've learned. Reading some of the Wikis and FAQs around traffic management has been invaluable, too.

Now I'm starting to feel the burn again, but learned a few more things along the way. I'm just debating whether to do a fairly invasive retro-fit, start again in another area of the map or start afresh entirely.

I'm edging towards plan B, since I'm also feeling smug about the dam I've just built that's producing 1600MW :D

    How great is this game?

You have to be really really careful when zoning high density - make sure you've got the transport infrastructure to deal with it, especially at the beginning when everyone is moving in.

My main issue isn't so much the HD areas themselves, but a pinch point at the highway junction.

My junction design was based on assuming that people would take the path of least resistance as far as traffic is concerned, turns out they take the shortest path even if it's completely stacked and another route is clear.

I thought I would be clever and create a couple of bypass roads. One of them nobody used, the other everybody used, creating even more of a problem than it was trying to resolve.

Now thinking about it, what I might have to do is move my highway junction a little bit out of the middle of the action, so it doesn't get quite so clogged up and raise the highway up for free flowing traffic beneath... but that's not going to be inexpensive.

Also, one way roads are your friends - it takes up a lot of space but two one one highways next to one another really get the traffic flowing.

Yeah, the one way roads are one of my lessons learned. I managed to sort out the most pressing issue with a couple of bypass roads that are being properly used now fortunately (one of which needed to be one way to prevent even more chaos).

It's functional, but not very pretty unfortunately.

I'm not sure about bustling utopia, but people seem happy enough...

Very organic growth intentional, if you're wondering :D

EDIT: Also, since I've posted a screenshot... do the graphics look like one would expect them to with everything switched to maximum? There's still a fair few aliasing issues even with AA switched on in game.

Looks lovely mate! I'd live there!

Yeah, to be honest there isn't any AA at all in the game..... but thats where Mods come in! Check out Dynamic Resolution.

Nice City! Makes me want to spend some time in Skylines again.

Anyone know if there is a way to completely remove that annoying chirper from the screen yet? I know you can turn off the text chips - but last time I played it was still visible and counting unread chirps and still annoying as hell!

Yep, there is a remove chirper mod too.

What are people's favourite mods then?

One of the first things I did was delve in to the workshop, but at that point without having played that much it was a bit overwhelming so left it a bit - now that my city is in full swing though have popped a few very good ones up.

Most of these should have been stock content IMO, but at least they can be modded in...

    - Traffic ++ - bus lanes!

    - Traffic Light toggle - great for when the game decides you need a traffic light somewhere where you really don't want one, e.g. using slip roads on to anything other than highways.

    - Precision engineering - a must

    - A bunch of larger and smaller versions of services buildings, though making sure to get ones that seemed balanced

    - Underground power cables - a nice little substation that can be used to get power across highways and other short gaps, without unsightly pylons

    - All spaces unlockable - actually started out the game with this thinking it didn't make sense for me to have to start where it wants me to, needed to switch on unlimited money of course in order to buy a bunch of squares, thinking I would be reset when I switched it off... turns out that it still tracks funds in unlimited cash mode, so had to dig myself out of quite a bit hole and the beginning before I was able to turn it off!

    - Extended public transport UI - great addition

    - Improved public transport - using this to manually adjust the number of busses on each loop

I've been looking at the unlimited oil/ore mod, not because I actually want unlimited (in that I'd switch it off after 10-20 years and remove the specialisation), but because it's preposterous that my oil ran out basically instantly and now the imports are ruining my traffic. I think they should give you at least 10 years out of non-renewable resources, instead of what seemed to be around 6 months. A few reports of this mod breaking things though, so I might just level the whole area.

Three must haves for me as I feel the UI is not quite in proportion and the text could be better, the third one is nice for when some sounds are far too loud over others:
    Scale UI - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile.../?id=409338401
    Change Fonts - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile.../?id=408286108
    Ambient Sound Tuner - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=455958878

Some others that I like using:
Old Brick Central Modular Station (because everyone loves modular stuff!) - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=459948884
Transport Line Colour Mod (makes it easier to see different transport routes) - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=409865621
Crossings (lets you place pedestrian crossings anywhere ont he road) - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=427258853

    ClearUI Sapphire Skin - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=428457597

I've got Traffic++ and Toggle Traffic Lights as well

The dynamic resolution mod certainly makes things prettier...

Shame I don't have anywhere near the graphical horsepower to render at 7680*4320 at a usable frame rate

Has anyone else come across this issue?

I had four cargo train stations with good road links, uncongested rail lines and flowing traffic city wide, but was still having problems meeting import demands. I've got very little industry in the city, just as much as I can keep populated with uneducated workers, and it's slowly decreasing as I'm de-zoning it as plots run out of uneducated workforce to maintain balance/demand.

Anyway, a fair footprint of commerce was complaining about not having enough goods to sell, so went for a port, made sure the roads were able to cope and plopped it down.

Now there's no issue with the amount of goods to sell, but this is happening...

No congestion issues with goods leaving the port, but the empty vans are stacking up more quickly than they port can take them. My rail stations are now far less busy than they were despite being closer in to the commerce, like the AI has just decide to screw rail now that I've got a port.

If I thought that another port next door would solve the issue in enabling empty vans to enter twice as quickly I'd quite happily plop that down, but experience has taught me that they would pick whichever one was closer and ignore the other one entirely.

It struck me that perhaps there's a pent up demand for more goods, so after a bit of time this may sort itself out to a steady flow, but then I'd rather not ignore it and wait until the traffic stacks up across the bridge and starts causing chaos in the city.

    Any tips?

I hope this thread isn't too dead? I've only recently started playing this game, after having bought it like 3 months earlier. It's really really cool, and I'm really enjoying playing it. Managing economics was pretty simple, so I quickly installed some mods and started a game up with everything unlocked and unlimited money. So now I'm in the process of learning all the small tweaks of managing traffic and public transportation :naughty:

I'm still playing it every week! I love the new 'After Dark' DLC and I've got some really cool user created maps from the workshop. Honestly, this is the only single player game I've enjoyed in five years or so!

Could you give me your best tips on zoning commercials? I've tried creating it on main roads, with good access to highways, but in the end the traffic load because of delivery trucks just gets overwhelming. I also have to agree with you. Apart from Skyrim, this is the first single player game since Sim City 4 that I've REALLY enjoyed
