Well i was gonna hold off on posting images till closer to the finish date, but i have been dying to get some pro feedback on my first mod... So without further ado..... hope these work... before you ask, no we DID NOT STEAL IT ! the locking mechanism was busted and it was older so rather than pay somebody to go and fix all the busted boxes they just buy new ones. Cool It looks very promising. The only thing I see presenting a problem here is the thickness of that metal. You're gonna need to buy some heavy duty equipment to work with it. That or eat through 20 dremel wheels a cut. What are you going to do with the theme of the newspaper holder?
If you have as jigsaw, buy some heavyduty metalblades, i used them for Alpha M... How big is the box?
the main box part is approximately 3 1/2 feet high by 1 1/2 feet wide and 1 1/2 feet deep. the metal isn't too bad on the main box (quite thin actually) the top part where you put the money in, along with the bottom foot thing are made out of the heavy duty steel. I got to work with the old dremel on the top already.... We chopped off the stupid coin return thing, and made a nice little hole.. this is whats going into the hole.... first coat of bondo... finished a little modding on this bad boy and its goin in there... it's an uninterruptable power supply in case you didn't recognize it. Forgot the exact specs but its big and ubar heavy so it must be good lol.
Basically it will be a Lan party in a box.. Meaning, that i can roll it in, set it down, plug in one power cable, plug in some cat5, turn it on, and have it run everything for our lan parties. It will contain.... a rock solid Linux Server (air cooled, water will not withstand the constant traveling this box will do) an Uninteruptable Power Supply (so when a breaker goes which it will, no problems) A regular sized LCD screen as a normal monitor (15 or 17 inch depending on what i can afford at the time) A small PSOne LCD screen for quick info about the system Many Hard Drives (going for a terrabyte if i can get the money together) A router with wireless capabilities As many small (4 port) switches as i can cram into it Large rubber wheels for traveling the only real cable other than Cat5 i want coming out of the box is one standard computer power cable that gets plugged into the side of the box with one of these... the problem i am running into currently is space, meaning i will have a good chunk of empty space. Very creative idea for a rolling, portable lanparty! Good job so far on the cutting, filling, sanding end of it - I'm looking forward to seeing more of this. One question, though. Is that a nail clipper I see in the picture with you cutting the hole? Please tell me you aren't filing the edges with that!! -monkey p.s. why yes it is a nail file, and HELL no im not filing with that LOL. I lost that little wrench thing that the dremel needs to change bits and that happened to be the only thing i could find handy to change the 50,000,000 cutting wheels my roommate and I have broken. I will be working on getting the primer coat free of imperfections today, along with chopping my metal up I should be getting from UPS today. What metal, you ask? Why not add a Hub/Router into it. Maybe a nice 24port jobbie... That will take up a little more of the excess room...
nice to see a dallas morning news machine going to good use. You should realy leave that on there. You know what be pimp, put an lcd (the size of a newspaper) in the window and have it display a newspaper background that gives all system info and random stats. JEEVES
Ohhhhh... this is a RIOT!!!! Excellent use of materials so far, this sounds like a PERFECT fit for the mod! Way to go!
yeah i was thinking about those (big momma 24 port switches)... because i know a place i can get them used but dirt cheap. My only problem with that is i was planning to try to isolate the major heat producing parts separate from the MOBO. Kinda hard to explain but lemme see if i can make something here.. I like it...goofy. I have no idea what those pictures are of but it looks like you spent a lot of time on them. BTW, what would you need the terrabyte of storage for? I thought LAN party rigs are just like a hub for every computer. Oh yeah, how are you going to wire up that LCD?
got my metal in today.... i havent had a chance to cut the pieces up yet because i was too busy working on the back of the coin box... this will be a window to see into the rack of switches. I cut a slot at the bottom to allow room for cat 5 to be put in and locked down when everything is set up. god i love my dremel.... first coat of primer... i also tidied up the handle because it was pissing me off (shoddy bondo job) dont have any pics of the handle though sorry. I will be working on these metal sheets tommorrow and will hopefully get a chance to update as well. Catch ya tommorrow. Vazz Oh,.... ok question though. it has wheels so it rools around thats great and all. but how are you going to get it into and outof a car/truck with out a hydraulic lift?
