the newspaper boxes have a big square block of concrete in the bottom weighing in at well over 85 lbs (so they dont get blown over, stolen, float away, etc) once i took that big thing out the actual box itself couldnt have been more than 50 lbs. Then i took out the spring load setup from inside and a few riveted on random pieces of stuff and things.

That and i have been, and will continue to chop pieces of metal off (windows, etc) and reduce the weight down as best i can.

The UPS (40 ish Lbs) will be the biggest chunk of weight that I will be adding into it, but i will be reducing as much of its excess bulk as i can.

I am trying to make it as light as i can, but i dont think it will be a problem for 2 people to lift it without much effort.

Yeah what woodshop asked? One UPS takes two guys to lift it up so you can attach it to a rack. You have 4? Going to take 4 guys to get it in or out. Then you have steps, doorways etc.. to deal with.

Small problems aside, what a kick ass idea. You dont just goto a lan now, you ARE the lan. Now about that 35 inch plasma display...

if 1 takes 2 men, then 4 takes 8men.. LOL
    :hehe:

or do you mean 8 to lift it and 4 to move it :worried:

Forget the caster like wheels, use a dolly hack it up and weld that sucker to the back end!
Those big rubber wheels will make all bumps, curbs, doors, etc. much easier on the hardware. Maybe incorporate the door handle up by the coin slot as the "moving handle" when you're wheeling to/from LANs

** Sorry for the large pic of the dolly **

this is what i mean by caster wheels...

and the UPS is heavy but i can carry it with one arm if I use a case carrier.

The weight will be an issue, but I am already doing everything I can to eliminate as much weight as possible. Such as, making the windows as large as i can, putting in lots of windows, chopping off any excess metal parts and clips and extra plastic things.

Got a few other things to do today but hopefully I can get some time to work on this more this afternoon.

I was planning this for a project in the far future, so you can use it if you want... I was planning a yellow case, but with black stripes across it. For an industrial/crime scene look. THta paint looks awesome btw.

thanks chrizzle, i was planning this for a color scheme...

yellow, aluminum, green lighting, and black (for lack of a better word) highlights

i will be adding more black than i had originally planned to tone it down a bit.

Ya! That yellow looks cool. It would look a little more "manly" for your friends if you take some hoppy paint and give it detail. (Make it look like its stripping off.)
That yellow is nice in my opinion. Maybe a matte finish to keep it from causing retinal damage? Just playin
I would suscribe if I knew how!

Well, i'm not the biggest fan of yellow. In fact, I hate yellow with a passion (I have banned the use of yellow for any walls in my house :hehe: ).

However, the color is very vibrant and looks like it will fit the box very well. With the aluminum and black details this sounds like it will be a sweet looking case.

    Looking great so far!

Great idea. Excellent job cutting. Though the color is a bit lacking :D

(plus, I had to post here, since this seems to be another Texas thread).

well i have been working on my painting and the bugs here in texas keep hopping on my nice paint and pissing me off, but its almost clearcoat time.

i have cut out the front window where the mobo will sit...the little flange thing is where the display for the UPS will be relocated to, so you can see it easier.

and i wired up the only external power connection...
first experience with heatshrink fun stuff
    [IMG]

the power connection....(posted earlier in the thread...)

it has two fuse spots built in, i have put two 250V 3 A fuses in it.
the connector specifies 250 V fuses but im not sure if 3 A times 2 for 6 Amps total is gonna be enough to power everything in the unit...

anyone with electrical knowledge that can help me out on Amps?

I will be running the following through this connection:

    heavy duty UPSupply
Antec 550W "true power" power supply
15-17 inch LCD flat panel monitor
    5-6 4 port switches
    PSOne 5 inch LCD
and all the fun computer stuff: 6 12 inch cold cathodes, 4-6 HDs, lots of fans

Please someone help me understand the kind of Amps im gonna need for all this....

if need be i can hack the thing to bypass the fuses but i kind of like having the extra protection. If it means im gonna be changing fuses every week the bugger is getting hacked.

well, seeing as you're here in 'meerika, i'm assuming you'll be running 110-120vac from the wall. now, watts = volts x amps. at 120v, 6 amps will let you use about 700 watts before the fuses start getting hot.

    DO NOT BYPASS FUSES.

the reason the fuses are rated as such is that any power surge above that level will fry things further down the line, including but not limited to the switch, wiring, power supply, motherboard, etc. (though i'd assume a nice psu/ups like that would take the brunt of the hit and the mobo would be ok). fuses are there for a reason. if you don't think this 700 some odd watts (figure the psu might draw 350 peak for what you have there, maybe 400; add the ratings on the rest together, remember amps x volts = watts, don't forget the draw current of the charging UPS) will be sufficient for everything going in your case, then you need to find another method of hooking things up. shorting a fuse is a good way to start a fire.

don't mean to jump down your throat, but things like fuses and curcuit breakers are there for a reason, disabling them can lead to bad things happening. a constantly blowing fuse means something is wrong and things need to be changed.

and of course, if anyone feels my math is off, feel free to correct (most was in my head)
