I just built a pc for a friend and I installed windows 7 64bit. Software resets the computer, then goes to the complete installation part of the procedure. It then loads the windows flag, on the loading screen, saying it's changing the registry etc. The screen goes blank and doesn't load, as if the screen has gone on standby.

I've tried everything i can think of, but he's a bit frustrated, and i'm irritated that i can't seem to get to the root of the problem, especially since everything is new. I hope someone here can shed some light on this issue.

    He has an;

    A8-3850,
    F1A55,
GTX 550ti(he bought one after i realised that motherboard has no video input),
8GB of 1600mhz Corsair Vengeance RAM,
    a 500GB western digital HDD,
    a CX430 power supply,
    and a Sony DVD rewriter.

Have you tried leaving it for 20-30 minutes?

    It sometimes does that.

IT'd be amazing if that was the case. He had to go to work, so i told him to turn it on and literally just leave it to it's own devices. Hopefully it'll do the trick.

Is this hanging issue common for windows 7 then? I use XP still, so i'm not familiar with it yet.

Any other drives plugged in while attempting the install? That one is a big gotcha with windows 7.

Nope. I tried that one, there was an internet stick and an ipod plugged in. I took them both out and re-attempted to hit the same problem.

Are two displays attached to the card? I've installed Windows 7 before to be faced with a blank screen, and soon realised it was because the desktop was on my TV (which was off).

I also un-attach mouse and keyboard after filling in the necessary info for Windows setup, or it would have froze otherwise.

Does Safe mode work? If it does, check the event viewer in Windows Logs > System for anything that might be causing a problem

I might try it without mouse and keyboard. Safe mode doesn't work because windows has yet to boot for the first time, so it won't let me.

i've seen what saspro suggested happen, sometimes it is best to just leave for a bit, go make a cuppa and come back.

it could be that its installing drivers and stuff that it knows about, but cant do anything with until after installaion of windows is complete

Thanks guys, i'll see what happens and then report back to tell what happens. It'd be nice to sort this out for him, because he want's to play some skyrim on pc, instead of 360.

No use guys. Left it on for hours to no avail, with nothing but the display plugged in.

I thought this may be the problem. He has a really old monitor, an old IBM monitor. It has 1024x768 res and it even has a vga cable attached to the monitor itself. Would this cause any problems? His installation of ubuntu hung for a while when I installed it, but that eventually worked.

    Any ideas people??

have you checked the disk(windows disk) for damage or fingerprints, as i've seen that be an issue as well

also try an alternate dvd drive if you have access to one

It could be the monitor or the graphics card - the flashing after the reboot is when Windows tries to recognise and load a "proper" graphics driver, and this might be causing the problems.

Try with a modern monitor and/or different graphics card.

As RichCreedy said, it might also be a scratched or dirty install disk - I've seen that cause problems too.

I've seen that as well but the OP said it gets to the part where it reboots to finish the install which would be after it had extracted and copied everthig from the disk.

First thing I would try before gutting the system is try a re-format and re-install just to make sure its not a fubar'd install

I fixed the problem earlier today. It was the old monitor.

I took his pc home to see if i could get it working and it worked first time on my monitor.
So i connected the pc up to his television and it was fine. He was pretty chuffed.

It's probably that the monitor was so old that it wasn't sending EDID information to the graphics card, so Windows didn't know what it was capable of.
