i've got an old guitar amp that I'd like to clean up and mod. Problem is that the pebbly plastic/vinyl (I have no idea what it is) is dirty and covered with paint, etc. any ideas on 1)what that stuff that covers it is made of and 2) how to clean it? I've tried some goo-gone on one test section, and while it removed paint, it also appeared to melt away the plastic covering.
Probably should go in general, but that's not for me to say. Though I just noticed the word mod, so it can stay I know the stuff you mean, you should probably just try a slightly damp cloth and soapy water. Soapy water really does clean everything
You're right! My bad! I also forgot that I'd like help with cleaning the control panel of accumulated gunk: Exterior stuff: @matticus- I'll try the soapy water, can't hurt, eh?!
Better. At least it's not one of the red vinyl metalflake amps. These cases are usually pretty durable. Soap and Water first, the try a mild plastic cleaner like those from Plaskolite, after that try an Automobile cleaner wipes like the tire wipes. I forget the name but they have vinyl interior wipes. john /edit Armor All Cleaner - not the stupid fake looking "make my stuff shiny" bottle. The leather cleaner works great on leather seats without changing colours but be warned - makes them slippery.
Armorall wipes should do the trick i.e. http://www.amazon.com/Armor-All-Pro..._1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1245639509&sr=8-1 from amazon.com, but obviously easier to get at your local auto parts store. Nanosec
If the paint dab on the side is latex, then Dow bathroom cleaner (scrubbing bubbles) on a toothbrush will remove it. If it is oil-based paint, use mineral spirits.
I was removing primer and polish from the same sort of surface, a sort of bobbly plastic on my old moped, bit of white spirit did the trick
