OK i know someone on this site made a guide to making a keycard for their computer to turn it on or possibly some other things. What i want to know is if there is anyway to do the same thing only with maybe a usb jump drive. Ive got a nice little 32mb one here that i dont use for anything and the idea came to me early this morning when i had to use my big jump drive. I dont need it to start up the computer so much as maybe be my login? instead of relying on a password. I did a little google on it and didnt come up with much.. any ideas?
I believe in Windows 2k/XP, you can tell Windows to use a USB drive as a "Smart Card", so that'd give you login access. Never done it, though, so I couldn't tell you how,
looks as though one has been made by a bigger company already.. not sure how much it costs though linky
I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but Abit have been bundling a product called "SecureIDE" with some of their newer motherboards. I've looked into these things before, and all they essentially are, is a cheap PCB that you stick in-between your HDD and the IDE cable. You get a short cable with it, that you have to plug a "key" into when your booting up your machine, otherwise the HDD will remain encrypted.
this wouldn't let you use your existing key, but it's a product along the lines of what you were looking for, except this one uses your fingerprint linky
what about Zap's security circut? could only turned on with the key and locks the keyboard and mouse. i asked him about this earlier and he said try googling a loop-style security circut. I know that may not be USB but it is security.
why not make one yourself? We are at a do it yourself webstite, right? Try www.gideontech.com or better yet,http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/212/1 give that one a shot, it should work out for ya, its looks like a lot of work but it looks like what your looking for...
Excuse me livelife46290, but that's the link that is 2 messages above yours. I'm the one that did that circuit and guide, and yes, it's a lot of work, but taking in consideration all the mods I've seen here, doing that thing is really easy.
yeah im sorry, i just realized that skylined, very informative guide by the way, i never could get it to quite work but hey no worries.
thanks for the info guys, it does look like it could be quite an undertaking.... ill let ya know how it turns out
"calking13" all Zap did was make a break in one of wires had it go through the keylock so that when he turned it off it cut one of needed fucntions. simple let effective, you could do it with a switch if you wanted
