It's a bit of a long shot but my sister's just picked up a 2001 Clio. It drove home fine but we can't start the engine again.

I'm fairly sure it's not the battery - all the lights work and that.

Stuff I need gonna check tomorrow:

    * Apparently there's a wire to the starter motor that can corrode.
    * The imobiliser receiver bit - apparently rain can leak in from the sunroof/arial and corrode the wiring.

Has anyone had this sort of problem before? I've googled, but I can't find a clear walkthrough for the latter job. All I know is it's somewhere in the vicinity of the steering column.

    Cheers,

    Steve

welcome to hell m8 ..... i can tell you things to check ....

will it crank over ? , if not its not the immobiliser , check the white wire going to the starter motor (if the motor is in the front of the engine its very easy to get at , diet engine i believe ) , the wire for the starter on Clio's were crap , if its loose or hanging off cut the connector off and put a new one on with some grease on the tip of it , also it may look as if its on properly , but they corrode slightly and cause high resistance . wiggle the wire a few times .

on your modle of Clio the rain in the receiver is not what you are looking for , your Clio is to new for that system , that was fitted to the early ones :) , now on the speedo cluster there will be a red led that should come on and stay lit up for a few secs with the ignition on . if it is flashing with the ignition on its a immobiliser fault....

try that first but if it is a immobiliser fault i believe its a Renault job only

also it could still be a battery , it may have droped a cell

One day after school, a friend of mine couldn't start her Clio. The motor turned over fine but the ignition wasn't firing. I tried, to no avail. I put it into gear and got out. My friend got in and turned the motor over with out pressing the clutch and the car lurched forwards. After depressing the clutch, and cranking the engine, it fired. This leads me to believe that the heavy load from the starter moving the car caused the immobiliser to reset and allowed the ignition to fire. That's my take on the situation.

So yeah. I'll stick to my German Volkswagen Citi Golf.

Thanks guys, the engine doesn't crank so fingers crossed it's something simple like the wire or battery. I can't remember what the flashy light was doing but I'll check tomorrow.

Have you tried to push start it?

bump starting a modern car is bad news and should only be considered as a utter last resort , you got to remember this car is fitted with a catalyst . now cats don't like unburnt fuel on them , it can kill a cat ! . it also put enormous strain on the cambelt . if the car is not turning over , its got to be the crank wire for the starter , or perhaps a dodgy battery

so you recommend doing those ? ..... what if raw unburnt fuel hits the cat , then it ignites !!! the monolith inside the cat will shatter , so i think your comment saying "eventually" is wrong .

and as for the cambelt !!!! give me a brake . bump starting a car WILL put unneccasary strain on the belt

I'd push start it if it was mine.

when you say no juice , please tell us what you meant m8 , some of the Renault's had a gel type battery fitted to them , and they are supposed to be dry looking , is it a Renault battery that is fitted ( may also say on the top of it fulmen ) try jump starting it first if it will then turn over , replace the battery , do not attempt to top up a gel battery , i think i can cause them to pop :eeek: , if you are unsure m8 , try and take a pic of the Bat and i will tell you if its a gel one

Was it jumpstarted before you drove it home? Did you know it had problems when you bought it?

sounds a bit like a lemon to me :-/

Juice-=electricity. It's a Renault battery, I'm charging it up and it hasn't exploded yet :)

Yeah it seems weird that it just went flat, my dad picked it up on Saturday morning then I tried moving it in the evening, there was power for the lights but no starter motor. I went out this morning and there wasn't even enough power for the central locking or wipers. I'm gonna tell her the battery is duff.

She bought it from a dealer and it got a warranty so maybe she should take it back. It's her first car tho, bless.

    Ghetto charger connectors :)
