Maybe your key is not disabling the immobiliser for some reason. Try replacing the batteries in the key, have you got the key wet recently?

Also have you had any other electrical problems, like the lights seeming dim when you use something else electrical, mainly when the car is stationary. If so then your battery may not be working properly.

You could try cleaning the battery contacts. http://www.doityourself.com/stry/cleancarbattery That seems a reasonable guide. A friend of mine has an older clio than yours and that had a dodgy battery.

Edit: If you do clean the battery contacts, make sure you know your stereo code before you disconnect the battery, that is if you still have the original stereo.

I'm assuming a w reg clio uses a transpoder chip in the key for the immobiliser in which case it's probably the pick up ring around the ignition barrel thats causing the problem. You could try getting a replacement from a scrap yard or ebay etc and swapping the pick up ring over and see if that fixes the problem.

My sister has a clio on an 04 plate, it did exactly the same thing, she had to use her second key with remote and the problem went away, it appears to be a common problem with Clio's.

As I understand it they do use a transponder chip and a pickup ring. Unless it's your keys battery or the key has gotten wet/ damaged recently it is probably the piclup ring. Another thing that can affect immobiliser transponders is strong magnetic fields. It's not likely but occasionally if your keys sit in very close proximity to something that emits a strong electro magnetic field it can scramble the key and cause the sort of problems you're experiencing.

Bottom line you either need a new ignition barrel ass'y or a new key. Hope you get it sorted!

I had massive deja vu with this.

With other threads asking about modifying Clios it looks like bit-tech ranks very well in Google with Clios and their problems!

If its any consolation I have a 2007 Clio Dynamique and it has the best remote key of any car I've ever had, best range EVER and 100% reliable :thumb:
