    hello!

    long time no post :)

I am converting my benchtop sieg x3 milling machine to cnc-
    http://www.grizzly.com/products/Mill-Drill/G0463

    The conversion includes:
    cncfusion ballscrew kit #4
    three gecko 203v's
candcnc ubob and modular gecko mounting

for now it will be 3 axis, maybe one day ill make it a 4 axis mill with an ATC(automatic tool changer) :D

The mill itself is pretty much done, well at least converting to ballscrews and adding the motor mounts, however LOTS of electronics work to be done.

a LOT of wiring. it will be neatened up once i confirm everythign is wired correctly.
there are 4 different voltages in here, 50v, 12v, 5v, and 120v to make this thing work :jawdrop:
the front :) fuses and e-stop. need to add LED's and switches to the front soon.
my tormach tooling system, first order :) not including the endmills/slitting saw this is ~ $150 of endmill holders. need to buy 2 new drill chucks and 1 more tormach mounting (~ $80) and a er20 collet holder($90) with collets($$). this is a reasonable middle step between collets and ATC, in that i don't have to zero the tool each time i change tools but i have to swap manually.
the mill sans motor. look at all the wires coming out of it :jawdrop:
    current side view :)
ballscrew pron. these are incredibly expensive :eyebrow: it was ~ $700 for the ballscrews, ballnuts, motor mounts and couplings :eyebrow:

    mill electronics and motor

So thats where i am right now. i hope you guys are interested :D
i will maybe be drawing up parts in sketchup then handwriting the code or i might dish out the $500-1000 for dolphin cad/cam.

Hope ot have another update by the end of the weekend- however it will mostly just be wiring stuff :wallbash:

    cheers!

for those of you who are going "huh"?

basically, im replacing the hadnles on the mill with very precise motors which are connected to a bunch of complicated electronics which is controleld by a computer- so basically turning a etch-a-sketch into photoshop

Very nice, using mach3 to control it?

    Me wants!:jawdrop:

Also as the electronics are inside an old PC case and this is in the modding section
there could be some CCFLs inside :D

Heh, I've made my own blacksmith tongs in my forge, but never heard of someone making their own mill parts from their mill...

The clamp of the miller at my school has machining marks on it - I always like to think that it too was made on a miller...

I thought it would be kind of poetic anyways. Kinda like the famous M C Escher drawing:

it would be terrible to make on the mill, if you were a master latheman or had more patience then me you could make it on a lathe :D the hard thing is it has to be EXACTLY .750" diameter.

    And thanks guys! :D

I was wondering where you went. When people like you go quiet it usually means they are up to no good.:D
    -case in point...

thanks cheapskate! life has been busy lately.

oreon- it is a sieg :D

not many updates but a lot of work. finally finished, well almost, the "rough wiring"

all thats left is soldering the connectors onto the z axis wires so i can plug the z axis in (ive already done this for the x and y). Then i will pretty much re-do every wire so that it looks a lot better then it currently does, its a rats nest i just wanted to get everything attached so i would have an idea of what to do next.

I had a big oops with the z axis gibb, may be a costly fix.

    Cheers

I am jealous, I have the SeigX2. Eventually I would like to buy a second machine and convert it to CNC, then buy a Lathe, then a surface grinder...on and on

 I'm still trying to clean out a space to put one. You can have too many tools. I have to climb through a car to get to some of them. I wonder if my cousin would want a radial-arm saw...
