I've been playing CoD4 flawlessly on my rig in my sig for around a month now (I think 24hrs play time) I get good FPS and my PC handles it well. Up until the other day. I was playing online and about 5 minutes in, the game went to a black screen then an error message comes up: iw3mp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.
I've recently overclocked my CPU from 2.6 to 2.9 GHz but I don't believe this is the problem as, I would have thought, any OC problems would shut the system down, not the game, and also, the OC is pretty stable.

Once I find the error message, I will look on the internet but does anyone have any ideas as of yet.

I have the most recent patch, I have up to date drivers, I recently changed my mobo (christmas present) but the problems didn't start when I did that.

I will install another game that is quite demanding to see if the problem is generic or specific.

I thought I had found a fix here
replace the mssmp3.asi file with a different one. I saw a small change but after that, same thing but my PC actually restarted itself this time. They say to completely delete that file so I will try doing that.

Edit: tried and tested. No error message, just a complete restart. Makes me think I'm getting somewhere. I will try this set up (no .asi file) when my new CPU cooler comes to see if the restart was to do with overheating and now the previous problem.

If you think it's a CPU over heating problem then might be an idea to get some software to monitor the temps and then put your CPU under load.... prime95 for example. If it's not hardware related you could always try making sure your drivers are up2date and/or re-installing the game with all current patches?

Are you overclocking on the stock cooler? also as the previous post says try and see how your temps are? also have a run of Memtest on ypur memory.

Also did you re-install windows when you switched mobo's?

reinstalled windows when I installed my mobo, when I overclock I use OCCT as a stress test and monitor my temps with the software that comes with the mobo and it's always been fine. (hence me not thinking its hardware related despite it getting quite warm in the stress test) I am using the stock cooler but got the AC Freezer 64 pro coming on the 7th Jan, with Arctic Silver 5. I do think it may be heat. If I had the time I can try an underclock but I will most likely wait for the new cooler as I should be revising right now. Damn A levels

Also every driver Im using is up to date and the game was only just installed the other day (when windows was installed)

I slightly underclocked my CPU and tested ... Still got the error, clicked OK and got out of it fine, this is really starting to ... annoy me so I will probably just reinstall in the new year.

If that doesnt work then, I'm out of ideas.

Sounds like possibly the PSU. The system may be stable in OCCT, but when graphics are rolling, you're drawing more power and that could be the difference.

The MSI K9A Platinum, has an onboard Realtek souncard i believe, here is a possible solution:

I cannot run iw3mp.exe / iw3sp.exe it errors with 'iw3xx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close'
There are a number of possible reasons for this happening:
Some onboard soundcards - Start ->Control panel -> Sounds and audio devices-> options -> properties. Pick Recording and then turn stereo mix ON.
Realtek onboard soundcards - Make sure you are using the newest drivers available. Some have reported that having a mic plugged in can fix this problem.
Realtek onboard soundcards - Sometimes disabling / enabling these can make it work (even if you dont use them for sound)
Realtek onboard soundcards and vista - Sometimes uninstalling the realtek driver and letting vista find its own works.
AthlonXP and Sempron (not 64bit) - Go into the cod4/miles folder and rename 'mssmp3.asi' to 'mssmp3.bak'. The miles sound system included is known to have issues with 32bit processors. NOTE: This will disable ambient music in the game. An alternative mssmp3.asi can be found Here! so you can have music.
Dual X2900xt in crossfire mode - Downloading the WDM driver from the Ati/AMD Site is known to fix this.
As always if you have problems, Try to update all drivers (motherboard, soundcard, graphics card) to the newest available. Most can be found at your motherboard manufacturers website ( www.asus.com www.msi.com.tw www.via.com.tw www.gigabyte.com.tw etc.)

I know i had that problem for AGES. Nothing worked (for me) - BIOS flashes, drivers, new motherboard (my old one was dodgy, and not being able to play COD4 annoyed to an extent where i bought a new one), reinstall windows, XP, Vista, etc... then i read about that microphone thing... and that sorted me out immediately...
