Scratch Build – In Progress college loft

I recently built a loft using red oak for when I go to college in a few days. It features RJ45 (networking cable) ran through the leg and to the top. I am currently staining and sealing it. Also the front of the leg will have rosettes and vertical trimboards to cover the holes with the bolts.

 

are you going to build a desk as well?

 

no the room comes with a desk. A desk that won't even hold three LCDs

but why bother running ethernet right to the bed? i'm assuming that it's so you can use a laptop in bed, but wouldn't it be so much easier to just get wireless? you can pick up a WAP for ~$25.

Is that hard wood or a fibre board laminated with hardwood?

you can't have a wireless router? that is an effin retarded rule.

 

You formally aren't allowed routers at many universities. The reason is because too many people are idiots and leave their access points unsecured. The school doesn't want strangers accessing the resources of the network for free.

If you can secure your router, then rules like that won't affect you.

Back when I was an undergrad only a few years ago, I had trouble with my router and left it secure but broadcast the SSID. The guys next door worked for computer services and came by to tell me to stop broadcasting the SSID. They said that computer services sometimes sends people to sniff our unsecured routers and fine the students.

 

ah, i suppose that makes sense. my school requires you to leave an ssh session open on your machine to access the network, so even if you had access to the wireless you still wouldn't be able to get in.

the college in my hometown had a computer lab open for 24hr public use and free wifi covering the whole campus. that was nice.

 

That's definitely a concern, but there's another one that people don't think about. Nobody on bit-tech would ever connect a router backwards, but it happens all the time to less tech-savvy students. And when you connect your router backwards, quite a few nearby computers will pull DHCP information from the student's router, rather than the university routers as they should. A 192.168.. IP address won't get you very far if the network is set up with something else.

At my university, one person connecting their router backwards can take down as much as an entire floor, depending on the building. And for some reason, we still formally allow them.

That's TOO nice for dorm life. You better seal the hell out of it. I'll give you a tip some slob/jerk taught me recently: Shaving gel works as a varnish remover. Once it's soaked in the wood it can't be re-sealed either.
