What bothers me is if we take the thought of using that kind of mindset, making a poster with simple advice would be impossible. on top of that it would result in that everything would have to be politically correct in order to avoid insulting anyone. something I have a hard time accepting, We would have to have a disclaimer on literally everything.

The fact remains that most Freshman students do drink, and the school has decided to act on that knowledge and try to decrease the damage, and if you find their official policy I highly doubt that they promote under-age drinking.

In the end what I don't understand is why you just cant say "well that doesn't apply to me" and move on.

I would find the sort of messages as those B_E mentions annoying but that would be because they do not apply to me and only wastes my time.

On a different note. I would make a formal complaint about this sort of mail spamming, don't you have some sort of student represent at the Uni ?
That many mails, especially the ones regarding charity can only be regarded as spam.

It's hardly over the top political correctness to expect that people not accuse each other of things based on assumption.

Take b_e's email, it starts out specifically stating that only a few have been using torrents, then goes on to say you (the reader) need to stop illegal downloads, assuming that the reader is one of those admittedly few.

It's rude and reckless to accuse someone of something, particularly something illegal, with no proof that the individual person, not just people of the same demographic, is actually responsible for anything. We avoid such generalizations on a daily basis (a lot regarding race and sex), it makes no sense to me why some are considered acceptable and others are not.

Do we really need to cut everything out for everybody, aren't people smart enough to see whether or not they are a part of the target group ?
Do you get insulted every time there is an ad for increased traffic safety ? Every piece of advice in your thinking assumes that you do not do it already.

Would we have to stop handing out condoms in the sex classes in high school as that would be assuming that all of them has sex before the legal age of 18.
Every commercial and every slogan has build in underlying assumptions based on Race/Religion/Age/political opinions/Body weight .

Why not when a certain demographic has a common tendency make a note of it and let the rest decide for themselves whether or not that note relates to them or not.

The difference is that they do not accuse the person of any specific behaviour or condition.

Some things are unavoidable. Weight loss programs only apply to people who feel a need to lose weight. That is a target audience. You'll notice, however, that many of those wonderful weight loss infomercials start off with something along the lines of "Are you sick of being overweight?" in which case I can mentally answer "No, because I am not overweight. This does not apply to me". Most* will not start off saying "You need to lose weight!" and directly assume that I am overweight.

As with the sex-ed classes, those condoms are usually* handed out with the magical "If". Many things already come with a disclaimer when they start to heavily imply things about the viewer/reader/audience. The small addition of "If" is all it takes to remove the assumption in many cases. Going back to advertisements, think of the law firm ones. "If you or a loved one suffer from...". The things you cite typically* already come with a way of excluding those who aren't applicable. There may still be implications**, such as with the driver safety ads, but there are far less direct assumptions and accusations.

*I obviously haven't seen every commercial or advertisement or slogan. Maybe some do, in which case I likely don't condone them either. From my own experience, most have a way of keeping things indirect.
**A strong implication may still be rude, depending on the viewer/reader's opinion. Here it becomes even more of a matter of manners.

I like the legal torrenting idea.
I also googled her. She seems like a douche but on that same page there are some funny looking people.

I went for the polite, friendly email option, and got the following response:

I feel kinda bad now :sigh:

Toldja she was nice. They should still revamp their mailing list system, though. There should be separate ones for each year and for different societies. It's ridiculous that they only have one for every student in uni.

edit - by the way, please don't anybody 4chan her details. 4chan abuse isn't funny or cool. It's just abuse. The fact that it's on the internet doesn't make it awesumlol.
