It will mirror whats on screen unless you have a dual monitor support video card. Or a second video card.

Cabling it as a second monitor would be the best option.

I like the idea that the software is not limited like 2/4 line LCDs.

ive looked at both of those thinline lcd modules in person (i live 20 minutes from parts express) and the 4" and the 5" will fit in 3 3.5" bays, if you wanted to use 3 5.25" bays you could go all the way up to a 7.5" screen, or 2 bays and use a 6.5" 16x9 widescreen one ...im waiting for parts express to get the 5" ones back in stock so i can get my front panel lcd action on ...

(remember, video screens are measured diagonally in the US)

Actual size of the thing was 85mm height exactly the same as 2 bays. I thought It would need more room to fit it hense the 3 bays assumption I have seen it pictured in two bays at...

Although they are showing a $120 version from

    OC Hideout

Morphine, has identified a potential problem. Wiring it as a second monitor may need VGA to Video converters. Unless the video card outputs to a TV as if it were a 2nd monitor.

I can look into this with a standard tv before I think about buying LCD.

(UK screen size is measured on the diagonal also)

The fundemental problem as well is that VGA actually looks very terrible on those NTSC or Pal screens.

Here are some photos that I took to show that small LCD's do not "Rule Big time"

The photos are taken from my 5" Marshall LCD. The text is barely legitable and winamp looks really bad on it.

Warning: the full size photos are 2048x1536 but represent what the LCD truely looks like displaying VGA

I too wanted to incorporate one of my small LCD's in a PC mod, however I found the results to be far from worth it. I recommend you spend the money on a good 20x4 line display instead, or maybe a graphical LCD display. These small LCD's just don't display VGA signals well at all.

I ended up buying a 15" NEC Flatpanel instead for dual monitor display and will save the bay space for something else.

ViperZ, is that LCD meant for VGA, or is it meant more for NTSC/PAL type signal?
TV's don't do a good job of reproducing VGA signals either. Would a small LCD meant
for a VGA signal be better?

My 5" does have a VGA in as well, but I can't get it to work properly through this input. I think it may be my Geforce 3 as the lowest it will output is 800x600, which is too high for this monitor.

I used the composite input as this is what most LCD's in consideration will be using for input.

It may look better using the VGA in, however the 5" LCD with VGA is not cheap and a person would be better off just buying a 15" LCD monitor for the same price.

    This is my LCD here

Sure, the LCD may look cool at first glance, however upon closer inspection it's not very usable to display desktop items. If all you want it for is for looks and to maybe render visual plugins for Winamp, then by all means knock yourself out. Personally I find the performance lacks a lot and I can't imagine why the reviewers at those sites don't come straight out and say it
I think a 20x4 line display would be better in the long run.

Arrrh i'm gonna have to change my statement to

    5" LCD sucks big time

Whats the picture like in composite with a TV signal or DVD playing on it?

Before LCD, I was thinking of a 4x20 VFD love the bloo filters! Might go back to the VFD idea.

I think LCDs in general need a few years yet.....

In able to answer the questions I removed my Hercules GF3 and installed my old Matrox G400Max with dual head display (Man I can't wait for my new Gainward GF4 :D ). Anyway this is what I have found.

Here is the Dual VGA set-up

The VGA input still sucks as you can see by the pictures. Text is barely legible :sigh:
I ran this as an extended desk top with the browser window dragged over to the 5" LCD Monitor. Setting was 640x480, 60Hz, 24 bit color.

So how does it look displaying DVD video? Not bad I guess, if that's all a person has. It still has the screen door effect of an LCD and text can be blocky at times. Black levels are not that great. But hey if it was installed in my car, I guess I would not complain.

I could not get the Matrox DVD player to install correctly, and I could not get Power DVD to display the video in the 5" LCD window. So I connected it to my Xbox with a composite out. I know the Xbox may not render an image as good as my console DVD player, however it was the simplist to connect with out tearing apart my system.

There is just a bit of moire in the picture that is not actually present in the LCD's image. It's not excellent, however it is pretty good by 5" LCD standards.

Bottom Line, I still would not recommend small LCD's with VGA inputs for PC mods, and think a 4x20 line display would be better, that's just me. LCD just seem to be the in mod right now, regardless of how terrible the image can be. However it's your mod and money so if you must absolutely have it.

I'm looking forward to my dual display with 15" LCD as the secondary display. Winamp visual plugins will look sweet on it :eeek:

Thanks for the shots you do need to see them in action to make a judgment. Really high res shots are so helpful thanks for taking the time.

I suppose you get what you pay for. At $90 that lcd is probably the cheapest 4" on the market. But its just not worth it if the quality is lacking.

I dont really think much of those LCDs anymore, unless you can actually put like a winamp visualisation on them. When I was using dual monitors the other day, however, I found that I could not have a visualisation fullscreen. :(

Or you could just have the MBM dashboard on there.

Not really sure about those anymore.

But, ViperZ, thats a class film you got on your TV there :D
