so basically i was playing medieval 2: total war last night then all of a sudden the brightness just drops. everything is dark on my screen. reflexively, i fiddled with my video cable for my monitor (compaq 7500 crt) to see if it came loose which could have caused my problem. nothing changed after this so i tried using my other dell monitor to see of it was my monitors fault. the dell worked fine so that means either my GPU (8800 Gts G92) is causing the problem or my vga to dvi adapter for the monitor to the gpu is causing the problem. either way i'm not sure what to do. I've tried cranking up the brightness but its so dark that after a certain point everything becomes washed out. does anyone know about any troubleshooting software i can use to somehow fix this problem or any suggestions? anything would be helpful. thanks
from what you say about the dell monitor working, I don't think its a gpu problem. do u have a different pc to hook up to the crt?
Sorry, Im not sure what you mean because to find out if it is the monitors fault it would make sense t rig it up to another computer. Donsn't sound like it's the pc's fault. Your pc monitor needs to be replaced IMO, because nobody bothers fixing crt's these days. MAy as well buy a new one or use the dell
oh yeah, the dell actually did work ( i just tried it). i tried it last night as well but i never noticed the difference, must've been knackered. ok, thanks guys for the super fast responses. it seems that something is wrong with the brightness settings on the compaq monitor. i'll try a driver update for it.
If the monitor just went dark on you then chances are that its hooped. Using the dell monitor proves its not the cable, or the gpu, or anything else. Its the monitor. How old is it anyway?
Thats what I think too. And a crt isint worth repairing these days either. Still, may as a well try everything that you can first, just incase!
i degaussed it about 5 times and there were no changes to the brightness. also, the monitor is "brand new". i say "brand new" because i bought it at a warehouse clearance. they were half off. i went with my mum to see what was being sold and she insisted that the monitors she first sees be the one that we buy. i told her it may be dodgy but since it was her money paying for it who am i to argue, eh? anyways, thanks guys. i really appreciate it. i'll see if i can return or repair it.
V welcome. Yeah tbh, if a crt has been sitting a long time the tube can be gone, so you never know it could be that. You really shouldnt go wrong with an lcd in my opinion. Hope you can get you money back. Cheaper for them to give you a new on than to repair these days. All the best!
Don't know if this will help at all, but if you have some compressed air, it might be worth a spray to see if it's just dust bunnies. Make sure the monitor is off and unplugged! Friend of mine just did that with his HDTV while it was on and got a nice fireball! Luckily everything seems to be working ok still. Glad we could help... that's what this is all about.
i don't think you have to worry about that mate because i'm in the caribbean, st. lucia (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Lucia) which is where i also got it.
ok, i got it repaired and it turned out that some brightness calibrator inside the monitor wasn't working. thanks for the helo guys.
