Tis a shame really, I'd rather be reading the forums than being kept busy closing pointless threads! There really is no need....as Rich says, just give it a rest :)

But I always thought an "off topic"-forum (or "general discussion" in this case) is the place where people can post whatever they want (except porn etc.) ???

To some extent this is true, but there are some lines there is no need to cross. Do you think anyone needs to start a thread to test the swear filter for the mods, I mean RTT is the one who controls it, so the mods already know what words will be filtered! So there is no need for a thread to test it out, as its just an excuse to swear :)

As for another thread that I closed, one titled 'lets see how far we can push the moderators', that would just turn into a mod-bashing thread where anyone with a disagreement with any of the moderators will air their grievances and just insult them....hardly condusive of a positive atmosphere wouldnt you think?

Were not having a go, just asking politely for such threads to stop :)

Anything including posts slagging off the staff? I don't think so..

GD is the place where people hang out and post things which aren't related to any of the other forums. You can post whatever you want, however like every other single forum on the planet, if it is deemed inappropriate or offensive, the mods can also remove/close whatever they want as well.

We do this for free because we want to encourage a nice bunch of people interested in the same thing to stick together and share knowledge.

If people want to abuse that or throw it back in our faces then we'll take appropriate action.

    allow swearing.

sure theres no need for it half the time, but its a nice addition.

don't become a censor, allow the net to be free. and if any kiddies get upset then they can write to blue peter.

what sort of soceity do we live in that feels it has to censor the web

    RE: Swearing........

How is allowing profanity and swearing a 'nice addition'? What is nice about someone using the f word every other word to describe something?

    Swearing ain't going to happen.

The problem with swearing is that it leads to agressive conversation, it's used as an insult, some people don't like it yada yada.. something which just sours forums. Plus as swearing is usually contained, if you're allowed to swear people just swear for the sake of it which makes it even more abrasive.

I know we all swear and it seems a little daft to ban it when we all say it, however we need to draw a line on how far we're going to let people go in their posts.

We ask very little of you guys and give back so much, I can't see why certain little requests to keep the tone of the place pleasant can't be met without a load of hassle.

Swearing, as Kna says, would make this place a hell of a lot more unfriendly. There is no doubt about that.

Also there are youngsters who read these forums, and I`m sure their parents would have something to say if they realised this place was full of fowl mouthed abusive b******* (scuse my swearing but I can`t spell the word I wanted to use :p).

As far as threads that are looking like turning into moderator/staff bashing exercises. If I had got there first myself, I would have deleted them on sight, not closed them. I am not saying that you should bow down and worship us, but at least show some kind of respect for the job we do for you guys. At the end of the day, we are (selected) volunteers who are here to keep this place under some kind of control for its visitors (i.e. U guys) ;)

If you have a problem with a moderator where you feel they have been unfair in persuing their job, either post a complaint in the feedback forum, or alternately, email them in person to discuss the matter, or email a member of staff to resolve the matter.

Now lets play fair and get on with the modding! :D

I forgot to add this earlier... but rather than singling out moderators and staff for threads being closed that are intended as nothing more than a flaming session. In fact, anything that is remotely a flame aimed towards any member is most likely to be closed/deleted/edited accordingly.

We are all equals here when it comes to that, moderators are afterall normal people, despite what u might think :p ;)

But as the swear filter filters all the bad words, does this mean I may swear as much as I want ?

If people are not allowed to swear at all, so what do we need the swear filter for? :D

    No.

The swear filter is there to stop swearing, but it doesn`t mean you should be testing it in every post. Swearing on a regular basis will, without a doubt, be frowned upon. Swearing, on the odd occasion is kind of ok, but it doesn`t mean you should be going out to swear here and there in every post. Thus, swearing should be kept to a pretty much bare minimum, please ;)

firstly i think rtt's message is perfectly clear
secondly the rules of these forums are not up to you to decide... the staff decide them and if you do not want to follow them then you shouldn't be here
all the mods give up a lot of spare time to keep these forums clean and friendly for the genuine users who just wanna talk. and some of you (no names) just wanna push us... its not a game and remember the mods&staff are the ones with the power and the staff are the ones with the legal responsibility for what happens on the boards

think carefully before you post and follow the rules... otherwise you really shouldn't be here

    mind the doors

The real issue is that you have to remember that the moderators are normal people. We are not paid or forced to do what we do. We do it through good will. If you test us repeatedly, we will get upset, and you don't want that, if you want to be here.
