Command and Conquer Generals, Oldish Game, amazing I played it 5 years ago and was obsessed, then forgot it for a time, recently bought it again with Zero Hour as well, when I returned home and installed it onto my machine and tried to run it I was met with a VERY irritating Error message stating that there was a failure possibly due to viruses, overheated hardware, hardware not up to required specifications (yeh right  ) etc...

So after going online I read a few disjuncted guides about reinstalling, trying various compatibility modes and patching the game, I tried all of them and even a combination of all 3 and my reward is that big fat annoying error message mocking me; does anyone have the game or has experienced a similar problem and does anyone know how to rectify it
(I have also posted on the official C&C:Generals Forum and am awaiting reply there too)

    Thanks Guys

Funny, i just installed Generals today and it didn't give me any trouble... Win7 Pro 64. I have no idea what it could be but it's not the OS mate.

Are you using compatibility mode or anything?

Have you patched the game fully to 1.04?
I would try Patching the game, and setting compatibility to XP SP2 (think that's how i have it)
If that doesn't work, drop me a PM with your email, and i will send you my C&C Generals/Zero Hour folder that comes from My Documents, as when i had the issue, that's what solved it, but every install on 7 has been smooth and works first time.

No, i said it didn't give me any troubles. I only tried vanila generals so far though.
Generals is up to 1.08 AFAIK, 1.04 is for ZH. Mine runs fine without patches though (but why would you play unpatched?)

Well thanks all for your feedback, I've tried pretty much everything logically and even went as far as creating a Virtual XP Mode just for it, nothings worked, so if you have any advice please share but unless its innovative/radically different from all I've tried I don't think I will bother, being fighting the blasted game all day - if I can't figure out how to make it run I think I'll take it back to Game and beg them to let me exchange it for Civ 4 -.-

It's buggy as hell is that game, thats the generic error message for when anything goes wrong. Although i've never really found a game that equals it. Unfortunatly i don't really have any ideas, it runs ok on my pc with win7

Moyo, PM me your email and i will zip up the My Doc files that Generals/Zero create when you first start up, and from which it saves user stuffs/stats, give that a try at least.

OMG, you'll never guess how I got it to work... honestly - this situation just proved to me the solution to a problem can come in the most unlikely of places

Haha, looks like you got it to work just after you sent me that PM.
Still, what was it you did to solve the issue?

Ahh well, as I was installing and uninstalling it so often I copied the CD data on to my hard disk to make it easier (still need the CD to play though - so I'm hoping that's all legal? :worried:) and so yer, I uninstall it, reinstall it (without the disk) then I insert the disk to play and hey-presto it works -.-
