I just went to a LAM, got back, and the BIOS keeps telling me that my CPU is unworkable. I then took out the CPU and washed it with a sponge, reapplied thermal paste. It still doesn't work.

It is a Pentium 4C @2.4 not overclocked with a Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition hs/f. The mobo is an Abit IC7-G.

At the LAN, I nothing bad happened to it. It worked fine there. It was a bit hot in the car for like 30 mins, but nowhere near the normal CPU operating temps. No bumps either, I strapped it in and kept my hand on it. It has showed no signs of dieing-ness before, I don't know if CPUs wear out gradually or what.

So, finally a question, are there any common problems with CPUs at LANs that I could check out?

    Thanks in advance...

    No no no...
I used it more like a rag. I left the CPU out for about an hour just in case, tho.

i have one thing and one thing only to say
R.I.P flamesop's CPU i hope it went to a better place where there are multiple motherboards and rivers of thermal paste, and trees made out of the best cpu coolers, and the best mobos, and the best graphics cards, and incredable over clockers

flameop will miss you flameop's CPU.

    lol :) :D

If the BIOS says "CPU unworkable" then at least the computer is POSTing and working somewhat, what options does it give you after that? If you can get into the BIOS and reset it and try again, what happens? And can you just get past the error message and continue to load Windows? Generally if there's a display on the screen the computer's not as badly off as you might imagine it to be.

It doesn't give any options, just says please recheck SoftMenu. I'll try to get into the settings...

    Yay! :D

I got into the BIOS settings, and loaded the failsafe defaults. It restarted, and it completed the POST. It then went on to the Windows XP thing asking what you wanted to load...normal, last known good, etc.

    EDIT://
I chose normal and pressed enter. It froze. This time I'm letting it count down to 0.

    EDIT 2://
It froze after a bar came on the bottom. Trying Last known good next.

I'm stopping with the eits, hope you dont mind.

BTW, a black screen came up after last known good, doing safe right now.

    Last Edit://

Im supprised you could get any conversation out of it, let alone a complex BIOS problem.

Lamb: "Yea mate, that CPU's unworkable sorry.. hang on, do i smell mint?"

...And n ow it doesn't work again...

It gets to the part where it says "Windows XP" and the things are supposed to scroll by, but right before they do it reboots. I did a repair operation thingy and now it blue screens. It says to run CHKDSK, so I got a boot disk but I can't switch over to my main drive (C). I tried cd "C:\"... The HDD shows up in the BIOS and under the FDISK command. Thanks..again..in adv..

I woud suggest trying a fresh install of XP, it can often get a screwed registry from playing around.

You could try and use the "repair" mode from the XP boot disc. Boot from the CD, then tell it to install XP, then it should offer to repair it with the R key..

Honestly, it sounds like something important is just a little loose. You should consider reseating everything (esp your CPU, memory, and IDE power/data cable), maybe even clean the contacts with a pencil eraser.

I mean, if it all started after moving and bumping it around (even only a little), this is what I would suspect.

I have seen this problem and cured with about 5/6 reseats then never show up again. It's kind of in-explicable, but what the hey.

Did that, it got me into the command prompt.

riluve, it all happened after I tried to install Windows Media Center..oh yeah...didn't say that :wallbash: oops. I tried to install Windows media center 2005 (pirated, just like all MS stuff...i buy Corel stuff and games...) and then it started to do this...

I did, then I took it home and it didn't work, then it worked, then I screwed it up again.

I did the CHKDSK /F, it complained, I did CHKDSK /P and it didn't complain, but it still doesn't boot properly.

    Knoppix runs fine on it.
