Very frustrating, brand new install of itunes8. Install, restart (as it asks to), click icon, nothing. Task manager shows itunes though, so somethings running. Click again, same. Nothing So uninstalled that. Found a late version of itunes7, exactly the same problem. If this is a case of me having to reformat, cos something is up - I won't be happy. Any helpers? EDIT; see new post
There's nothing in Apple's forums? Try this first, even though you don't get an error it worked once for me when iTunes went south. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304318
Apparently there is a bug with the latest iTunes that causes severe problems when you're using Vista (XP is fine), not sure if they've fixed it yet or if they are still working on it. I believe it often results in a BSoD crash and you would need to unplug the iPod/iPhone and restart the PC.
I have same problem with a 7. something version... The icon won't work, but if i launch through the start menu, all is well... Dunno what's wrong but i don't use itunes much, so its all good.
Is there anything else I can use instead? I won't be buying through itunes anyways! I use WMP at the moment, so if you can get some sort of plugin for that, that retains the usability of the ipod that'd be ace!
Right, its got worse. Just done a reformat of windows, installed itunes8 early on, and still nothing! doesn't launch the application just lies in the background "running". Any other ipod managment program i've found via google has just messed me around. Nothing really works nicely. HELP!!! Its brand new ffs
Now now, let's not get all anti-Apple, that's an old tune that's been played to death. If iTunes has let you down, try having a look for a Winamp plugin - I used one with my Mum's shuffle temporarily, and it worked a treat!
iTunes is quirky. It won't start, it won't stay shut down when you shut it down (there's a fix for that as well). 1. Have you installed iTunes for all users on your PC? Right-click iTunes, select Properties, and Security tab; make sure that you are listed in the Groups and User Names window (Authenticated Users can Read, Write, Execute and Modify; Specific named users can Read and Execute). Else you have to Run as Administrator --see if that helps. 2. Is your firewall blocking it (if you were a n00b I would guess you are running Norton)? It won't run if it can't talk to the intertubez. 3. Is Quicktime installed and functioning properly? It needs that... If it is installed and you get no joy, you need to uninstall, and then delete all remnants of Quicktime along with iTunes before attempting a reinstall of both. Keep in mind that the Quicktime uninstaller fails to remove up to three Quicktime files buried in WINDOWS/System32, called QuickTime.qts, QuickTimeVR.qtx and quicktime.cpl (Windows XP only). Take ownership, delete. Reboot. Re-install iTunes + Quicktime. Apple has fixed that. The current download of iTunes 8.0 for Vista is fine. If your iTunes won't stay shut down after you shut it down: Shut down iTunes using the Task Manager. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Find "Bonjour Service". Right click and Select "Properties". Click the "Stop" button. On the pull-down "Startup Type" Select "Manual". Click the "Ok" button. Restart iTunes.
Guys, if you not gonna be useful. Just don't post. I'm fed up of fanboys as it is. Bye. Thanks Nexxo, i'll give it a go when I'm back from work
Right, something isn't right here. I suspect possibly my memory is dying... I keep getting BSODs, or just complete lock up - which are pretty much the same anyway tbh. Though, its only happened so far when i've tried to sync to the ipod using something other than itunes, which syncs fine for a few tracks then freezes or bsods. Then I tried just syncing a few tracks onto a normal flash drive (that works perfectly!!) and it did the same, few tracks, gone. And just earlier, I was photoshopping a load of big RAW files, done that, all saved to jpg, went to open firefox and it bsod just as I clicked! Just to add, nothing is overclocked, all stock. Temps are more than fine too! PSU has been like a rock for a few years now (580w hiper modular) Anyone got any ideas what I could do?
Grab a copy of memtest86+, burn the iso to cd, and boot the iso.. then run the test. http://www.memtest.org/#screen Should get all kinds of errors if the memory is bad, or the memory controller. Though keep in mind its not an exclusive test.. just because it passes don't mean all is perfect.. If i remember correctly.. its also an infinite length test.. so it'll run over and over forever.. just make sure to let it run for a good few hours. You'll figure it out. I'ts been a while since i've used it tbh.
