Is this possible, to make an adaptor to plug a hard drive into a compact flash slot. Because then i can use a laptop hard drive, buy a compact flash mp3 player, and have lots of storage. Does this sound fesable. Because im pretty sure you can get them the other way round, so why not this way.
Yes, you definably can do this the other way around. The only problem I can see is that the laptop hard drive needs 5 volts where a compact flash card can run on 5 or 3.3 volts. Also, compact flash cards have 2 interface methods, they can use the standard ata100 or a specific format for cf cards. If your mp3 player uses the ata100 interface, then this might be possible but if it uses the other format, then you cant hook them up.
Thanks for your quick reply. Power will not be a problem (will sort that out with batteries, and a regulator). But Is it possible to figure out what interface method it uses, without opening the case (so then i can buy one that will support it). Nick
I don't know how to determine the interface but hopefully somebody else on the forum will. If you could somehow find a schematic of the mp3 player, then you might be able to see how it is hooked up to the cf card.
My understanding is that pretty much all CF readers (mp3 players, cameras, etc.) use the non ATA format to read CF cards - so no, this technique will not work, unless you are really, really, really lucky.
