I've been putting up with this for almost a year now, because it really is an on and off situation, but now I bough Left 4 Dead 2 it seems to be happening a bit more often, and it's starting to get on my nerves.
At first when it happened I was using Vista, and I thought it could possibly be an issue with the OS. But now that I have upgraded to Win 7 and it still occurs, I can rule that one out.
What happens is the game just freezes very suddenly, no warning signs such as slight lag or anything. When it freezes it plays the last sound that was heard over and over and over, and becomes quite painful to the ears.
Trying to Alt Tab or even Ctrl Ald Del out simply doesnt do anything, and I end up holding my power button down for a few seconds and just starting it all up again.
Anyway, if anyone knows any ideas or solutions, I would greatly appreciate hearing them.
My system meets (by far) the requirements of all modern games, specs below.

Intel i7 920 stock clocks (Stock cooler aswell, the issue maybe?)
    Nvidia GTX285 black edition
    Corsair 1000w PSU
    EVGA X58 mobo
    6GB 1333mhz Ram

6GB RAM, is that 1GB per stick or 2GB per stick? how many sticks have you installed?

try a better cooler, Intel stock cooler can just barely hold on to i5 750, with HT on the i7's, it's bound to be hotter.

Yes that freezing can happen with the memory. Have you done a memtest

i had the exact same problem with my rig until i lowered the OC on the CPU so seeing as yours are stock that's a bit puzzling. is your graphics card overclocked? if so, that me be the cause of the problem as it may be pushed too far and isn't stable. anothe reason for this could be that the memory isnt installed properly i.e. triple channel mode or dual channel mode etc. depending on your current setup it should if it is a 2by2 set up it should always be dual channel and 3by3 should be triple channel. The cause of your could be any of these and then some so if you try each of these and it doesnt work im afraid i cant help.

    good luck
