    Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can help me as basically the computer won't boot from hard disk. It will boot from CD/DVD but not from my Hard Disk.

I last used my computer on Friday evening before going away for this past weekend. Have arrived home to find that my computer will not boot into Windows. Nothing unusual there then! However this is different to the usual problems one normally associates with windows boot issues.

When my computer shut down last week it did so without carrying out any updates so I'm sure that isn't the issue. Besides the issue seems to be the BIOS and not the windows installation.

Basically the symptoms are that the computer goes through its BIOs checks but ends up in a hanging state after Verifying DMI Pool Data. It will boot CD/DVD but will not boot the Hard Disk. The computer hangs at the following:

    "Verifying DMI Pool Data ............"
    "Boot from CD/DVD :"
    "Boot from CD/DVD :"

Then there is a flashing cursor under neath the last line (screenshot attached) and it sits there until it is rebooted.

If it was an MBR error or Windows issue then I would expect a "System Disk Not Available" alert but this does not appear.

As it will boot a DVD I ran the Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium repair facility from the installation DVD on the computer just in case it was a Windows installation problem. This hasn't cured the problem although it did find an unspecified fault with the computer.

The auto repair function hasn't worked (I didn't expect it to) and I include the log below.

I have restored the optimum defaults in the BIOS but have had to allow USB keyboard and mouse functionality as well as disable the Gigabyte boot logo. There is no OC done on this computer and I haven't actually ever over clocked anything. Well except for the GFX card but that was factory overclocked by BFG.

Anyway I'm at a loss as to what is going on with my computer. WIll boot a DVD, won't boot the Hard Disk although the installation of Vista looks fine.

My gut feeling is that it is a motherboard problem... what do you all think?

    Computer specifications (if it helps):

    -+-+-+-+ Start -+-+-+-+
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz
    Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R
    8GB DDR-800 Mhz (4 x 2GB PNY DDR2 800MHz 5-5-5-18)
BFG 1GB GTX 280 (OCX Version)
Creative Labs x-Fi xTreme Gamer Soundcard
    2 x 500GB Saumsung Hard Disks
    2 x LG DVD-RW SATA
    Corsair 1000W Modular Power Supply

The bits that probably won't make any bit of difference:

    Samsung 24" SM-245B 1920x1200 TFT
    Logitech MX3200 Keyboard and Mouse
xBox 360 Wired Controller for Windows
    Coolermaster Cosmos RC-1000 Case

    Software:

    Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit SP1
    (Home Premium)
IIS 7 Enabled with MySQL 5.0.45 and PHP 5.2.3 (32-bit) modules installed.
    -+-+-+-+ End -+-+-+-+

I have run a system repair using my 64-bit Vista HP DVD. The log is as follows:

unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem.

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x2
    Time taken = 550293ms
    -+-+-+-+ End -+-+-+-+-+

So it does look like there is an issue but Windows cannot repair the problem and thus the problem still persists. I'm starting to wonder whether its the motherboard. No beeps are heard during the startup nor are there any warning lights on the motherboard itself.

Some useful screenshots (taken with camera):

The problem! This is where the computer hangs for all eternity if a CD/DVD hasn't been booted from.

you might try a full repair or system restore instead of the startup repair.. not sure what this means exactly.. looking it up- you might have got trojaned while surfing the porn XD

unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem

Strangely I had this exact problem with the missus XP machine, no matter what I did it would fail at loading DMI Pool Data. In the end I found a spare drive and just Loaded Windows 7 RC and all is fine.

What I suggest is if you can load a fresh OS onto a different drive, have your current primary disconnected and before re-connecting, update the new installation and ensure anti-virus is installed and updated as well as all drivers are up to date.

Would probably be quicker than trying to fault find the current OS issue.

    Thanks both of you.

As I have Windows 7 Home Premium on pre order (one of the lucky £50 mob) I was going to do a complete re-install to wipe the slate clean towards the end of next month in any case.

So what I am going to do is just wipe both HD's and start again.

However I did do a complete backup of my F: drive (all of my data) and the game saves in the documents folder on C: to my external hard disk about a week ago so I have a full image of what was on the hard disks of any value. Obviously any applications I have the original install disks.

Going to run bare bones until the end of October though... will probably use my laptop primarily until then anyway.

So I'm currently installing XP onto the computer as my Vista is an upgrade only copy... fingers crossed the HD will boot after this!

I'll ensure my Norton Internet Security is installed and fully up to date as soon as Vista is back on the machine...

You're probably right, quicker to re-install than trying to get to the bottom of the actual problem which really annoys me as I like to know what has happened but in this case I'm just going to let it go as I can't be bothered to do anymore tinkering!!!

    Thanks again.

    Richie.
