Networks Computer not showing up over wireless

Hey guys, this is a real pickle!

At uni we have a wireless network covering the house, with 5 clients, all running from a Netgear ADSL router. 4 of the machines are playing ball as they should - mine, with XP pro, 2 with XP home and one Mac with Leopard.

Another, with XP Home, is proving very tricky indeed.

I've set the network up with WPA2 encryption and given everyone a MAC-based static IP, assigned by the router through DHCP. 4 of the computers show up in the router's "Attached Devices" page, with the tricky PC not showing up in there.

Not only that, but the machine doesn't respond to pings. Where it gets weird is that the machine functions perfectly - full internet access through the router etc, connected to the right network, through its static IP address.

All the workgroups match, and we can share files over the network between the other 4 computers without troubles etc, that one computer is not playing ball.

Anyone got any ideas?

It's not really a major problem, it'd just be nice to be able to share files across the whole network, and have all the connected devices show up on the router.

 

Firewall issue?

 

Have you tried a different wireless adapter on the problem PC? Or even a different driver for the current wireless adapter on that problem PC?

 

Oh oh oh, is "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" ticked in the connection properties dialog?

Have you run the network setup wizard [to enable file and printer sharing]?

 

Does the computer with XP home, have the WPA2 client upgrade?

Seconded if you can't get pinged but are on the internet through the right network make sure the firewall is off.

I think it could be a Firewall issue also.

Ping failure, while there's still internet access, usually means a Firewall problem, if the computer is in the same Workgroup.

 

What firewall do you have installed on the bad computer?

 

Afaik the only firewall on the bad computer will be Windows firewall.

We run a hardware firewall, so the rest of us don't bother with a software job. I'll look into whether that's the trouble.
