My computer has recently started turning itself off suddenly (last few days). This appears to happen completely randomly. Motherboard monitor comfirms that all tempratures are fine so it isnt a heat issue.

The computer just switches off and all power is lost, the power button stops working and I'm forced to unplug and replug the psu in order to get it to power back on. Windows then always boots up normally without fault.

    The system error log recorded:
    Event 6009
    Event 6005

At the same time the last shtudown occured...The help center says these events happen when a shut down command is initiated such as crtl/alt/dlt...only I initated no such command?!

    -------------------------------
    Whats changed recently:
-I recently cleaned my pc and then it would not start, i later discovered this was due to me knocking lose one of the sticks of ram...everything has been fine since resitting the ram almost a month ago. I doubt this is related as the error is far more recent...but could such a problem be related to damaged ram??

-I re-formatted the system a couple of weeks ago, everythign has been runnign perfectly smoothly since, except this error in the last few days.

-There have been no software/hardware changes. The problem seems to have come from nowhere and occure completely at random!!

    -------------------------------
    System Spec:
    -Suttle SN45g v2
    -250watt Shuttle Silent X PSU
    -XP3200+
    -9800xt 256mb
    -1024mb Generic Ram
    -160Gb SpinPoint ata133 HDD

Any help greatly appreciated, i'll look for patterns in occurence.

Well, ignoring the error messages my parents computer had that problem (coincidently it was also after I cleaned out the PC of dust...), I would have to unplug and plug the PSU in, or turn off the switch for a bit before I could get the computer running again.

Replaced the PSU and everything was fine so I'd say switch the PSU over to see if that solves the problem. Since you actually have to unplug the PSU it has to be a hardware problem and not a software problem.

I'm gunna unscrew the psu and clean it out.

But the temprature reading form the psu is fine and the rails are strong, Shuttle PSUs are known for quality and its been running the system flawlessly for over a year now....perhaps there is a lose connections somewhere?

Oh and techniqually there were no error messages, thats just what i found in the system log when i went routing around for an answer.

Check all the Front panel connections, make sure they are tight and no loose screws or anything inside the case. Whenever you clean a system , rebuild it at the same time, this forces you to check EVERY connector

Well i've changed nothing but i've turned off alot of my other stuff and it now seems fine.

    Let me explian:
my computer, monitor, TV, Amp, DVD player, Sub woofer, AV kit, CD Deck, MD Deck, and a fan...Are all plugged into a big 10-Way splitter/extension....which is plugged into a normal wall socket. So i figured perhaps the PSU wasn't gettign enough juice or these things were pulling power away from the pc or something....So off alot of other stuff went.

Alls been fine but, as i said this problem is completely random so only time will tell.

Does this seem a plauseable explination? Perhaps i should invest in a better power splitter?

I've just got this problem now. Changed my case over the night before and now the computer turns itslef off randomly. Its not temprature related because this new case cuts my temps in half, and I've opened it up and checked every connection. its not that its not getting enough power because it has its own socket on the wall

wow i was surprised to see my name at the top of the thread, long time ago :p

i never worked it out by the way, got shot of the shuttel...my advice is check there's nothing shorting out on the case - especially if you've just remade the system.
