Well me and my buddy have decided what were going to do for a science fair project. Which factors most affect the operating speed of a computer?
I was wondering what you guys think are the most essential things tthat effect the speed of a computer. :D

Lots of things, CPU, RAM, HDD speed, GFX (depending), hard to pin-point which helps most. You wouldnt put a 7800gtx with a 1.4ghz p4, or a 4800+x2 with an mx440..

What do you mean by operating speed? Technically, that would be the CPU's clock speed, meaning that the FSB and the multiplier would be two rather significant factors ;)

If you mean in general Windows usage, I'd say that CPU speed (up to a point), followed by the amount of RAM, are the things that make the big difference. A system with a CPU of only 1.5GHz, but a gig of RAM, will run Windows very nicely. Hard disk speed comes into it next - the difference between 5400rpm and a 7200rpm hard drives is quite noticable IMO.

If you're talking about things like Super PI, then CPU speed is the king, with memory bandwidth close behind (especially with processors based on the NetBurst architecture).

Gaming? Modern games need much more graphics grunt at higher resolutions than anything to do with the CPUs (within reason), as Bit's benchmarks have shown.

well <=256mb on xp will be lagging you up a bit....
high fbs is good to have
cpu speed/catche, harddrive if that poor, motherboard not realty, or optical drives, gfx in desktop stuff you nonly need realy crap...

The speed if the interface (OS) is OS dependent.

On Windows XP and OSX which are bloated (compaired to older OS's) you will find RAM offers the most benifit up until a point, followed by Processor.

Windows 2000 and stripped down XP will also beifit from RAM but the processor will now play a bigger part than on XP and OSX

Windows 98 you will tend to find the processor will be the most important factor
