I recently received my replacement motherboard from XFX after the ethernet on the first one died. The replacement is still a 680i, but an older version of it. Upon putting my computer back together and trying to boot nothing happens. Everything is receiving power because all the fans start spinning as well as the harddrives; but the computer never boots into the BIOS, let alone Windows. Im not sure what the problem is but I was hoping I could get some suggestions. The only two things I can think of are that the monitor (Samsung 906BW) died or that I need to get yet ANOTHER new motherboard.

FYI the only two things that changed are the motherboard and I took the built-in speaker out of the case (because I never had it plugged in).

EDIT: After posting this I noticed it coulnd't possibly be the monitor because it displays the icon in the corner for which input it is using. So is my motherboard fubar?

Check the clr cmos jumper is not set to clear. Is there a speaker on the motherboard? If not, get one plugged in. Check the gfx card is seated correctly. I'd also completely re-do putting the cpu and hsf on/in - it's a pain in the arse but it'd be worth doing if that's all it was. While you've got the cpu out of the socket, give the socket a good blow of air and also check there's nothing on the bottom of the cpu. Ensure the hsf is clipped in properly.

Try booting with the minimum of stuff plugged in, i.e. cpu, one stick of ram, gfx card. No hdd, no dvdrom, no physx, etc..

Might sound like teaching an old fart how to suck eggs, but it's normally a simple thing that's missed :)

Or, as you say, you could've been sent a dud board.

Thanks for the tip Kenco, but none of that stuff worked. Granted the graphics card may not have been seated properly but it is now and I still can't boot. Monitor test reveals it is getting a signal, just nothing there.

So any other things you guys can think of?

Make sure all of the power plugs are plugged in like the 12V auxiliary power plug (4 or 8 pins) because I've done that quite a few times - the computer will power up but nothing will happen. Same thing with the graphics card power plug. And of course try it with minimal hardware.

Yep, the 6 pin for the graphics card; the 8 pin for the processor, and the 24 pin for the mobo are all set. Could it possibly be that the processor is fried?

Well I continued trying to fix it this morning and I just realized that the actual power light on the front of the computer never turns on, even though the pins are plugged into the mobo correctly. The HDD activity light blinks once and then turns off too.

All I can think of is bad power supply or they sent you back a dead motherboard (It's probably the latter). I doubt it's the processor, because I just dealt with a bad board (with a perfectly good processor) that would light up it's own power LED, spin up everything when turned on though the case's power light wouldn't turn on, and then it would shut itself off after 15 seconds or so. Bad motherboard in that case.

Thanks for the response, and I'll know whether it's the motherboard or power supply on Thursday because XFX is delivering my new one then.

My computer did the same thing and it ended up being my video card and not my PSU or motherboard. Take your video card to a friends and put it in his computer to see if yours actually works if the new motherboard does not solve the problem.
