I am pretty sure the PSU is causing this, but I wanted verification. My mom's computer is built in a Cooler Master Centurion 5 case, so the sticky power button is a non-culprit. What happens is when she presses the power button the fans and lights turn on, but after 1-2 seconds it shuts off. If you try enough times it will eventually turn on, since the crappiest component in the thing is the PSU (Aspire 500w) I suspect it is that. Is there somthing else that would make it act this way, or should I order a new psu? Since it runs fine when it turns on seems a little wonky to me.

Check that nothing is being shorted out.

What other things are in it?
    NEC and Lite-On opticals
    Western Digital 250 GB sata
    AMD 3000+ Venice
    Epox 9NPAJ SLi
    GeForce 5750
    and the Aspire 500w PSU

Nothing is being shorted out, I am sure of that. Once it starts up it runs fine.

What happens if you just use a screwdriver on the power switch pins? That'd rule out the power button at least.

Very typical symptoms of a dead PSU.

This happened to me earlier this year. I had a bad stick of ram that, when replaced, fixed the problem. I suspected it was the psu, but it wasn't.

Oh yes, it's Kingston HyperX ram, so I have high doubts about it going bad. Besides, if it was that the computer wouldn't even turn on.
