Hey, the boss is getting a Mac and we need to get it on the domain since im a complete mac noob i was wondering if this is possible and best method to do it. we currently have windows server 2008 running exchange 2007. we have several mapped drives that it will need access to as well as exchange. thanks in advance
It is possible - samba should work.. although it isn't hugely reliable in my experience. The 'softies dropped several services in WS 2008 that made sharing with OSX easier... for no apparent reason. Have a look around for some AFP software which you can deploy on the server to make them play nicely. Tbh getting one mac in a pc network is madness.. even if he is the boss.
yeah i know but it may turn in to a Mac for me as well so i may have to learn about them. CURSE YOU APPLE. unfortunately its not because he wants one its because he has to due to some areas we are expanding into and the software is apple driven. so he needs mac to show clients what its all about.
http://kb.wisc.edu/ams/page.php?id=12248 has some good tips. Macs can browse SMB shares fine. The build in mail application on Snow Leopard can talk directly to exchange 207
thanks saspro looks good ill have to give it ago when the laptop arrives. + rep to you sir for the handy link
im sure it does have a windows alternative but we arent talking consumer stuff here it for commercial application The software is embeded and Mac OS is stripped and a lot of normal functionality is removed. its a complete product rather than just an extra piece of software. im sure there are windows alternative but using a custom PC + win 7 + third party software would be a nightmare for both enduser and support as im sure everyone would blame each other when something goes wrong. With an all in 1 package there is only 1 person to blaim and 1 to solve. EDIT - the reason im not saying exactly what it is is because this is a very new sector and business deals are still currently been done so cant have someone sweeping this from under our feet
