Hey, just gone to install debian on my new box and i just realised im not sure what architecture to get to try a 64bit operating system? Is it still i386 or somthing else?
There should be a 64bit counterpart, probably named x86_64, but i368 (or 686) [x86] will give you 32bits, which is compatible.
Hey these are the options given [alpha] [amd64] [arm] [hppa] [i386] [ia64] [m68k] [mips] [mipsel] [powerpc] [sparc]
Are you sure Glider? Only the article says IA-64 is for Itanium - a whole different kettle of fish. I would have thought that i386 would be the one - I didn't think Conroe was 64bit? Perhaps ask on the Debian IRC channel - they should know for sure!
I'd say amd64... Intel did copy AMD *edit* "AMD64 has been adopted (under the name EM64T or IA-32e) by Intel" - from wikipedia
For x64 use amd64 (this includes all the processors made by Intel, too), ia64 is for Itanium/ItaniumII which are only used in some server-machines provided by HP, SGI,... HTH
