For my Samsung GSII I found the following two programmes most useful. NoLED - as the handset doesnt have the LED beacon that I was used to on my previous android mobile, this does the same job nicely. It's highly configurable. Sound Manager - Allows you to set times and periods to adjust the volume. I used this to put my phone on silent, automatically over night so the full-charge notification didn't wake me up!!
The apps i find most handy or fun on my HTC Desire are: Dropbox Angry Birds IMDb Evernote(can be quite handy incase you forget stuff occasionally) ASTRO(File explorer/Manager can be very handy) 3G Watchdog (Very handy if your on a small allowance or you use 3G a lot) Meganoid(Fun but infuriating game) Exchange Rates(Very useful if abroad, pulls down the latest rates from central banks) Trip It(Forward a trip confirmation email and it auto sets out your itinerary, includes your print codes for fast ticket systems) and who can forget the loveable but time sucking Doodle Jump. Also don't forget the official bit-tech app
google shopper, personally the best barcode scanner app i've used. engadget, cnet, bitech and various other tech related apps. ebay and paypal, comes in handy wordfeud, word based game a bit like scrabble tunein radio, best radio app out there. evernote, handy app for various notes and reminders swiftkey X, really good replacement keypad app, its way better than the stock android keypad. photbucket, good app if you use your camera a lot, you can set it to automatically upload photos after you've taken them
Does anyone know any good apps to reduce power consumpton, for example, something that inverts the screen colours when on low power? PErsonally I'm addicted to Yahtz which is basically Yahtzee on your phone.

andriod has a built in setting, well mine does anyway you can set to so when it drops below a certain percentage you can choose actions, i.e turn off bluetooth, wifi, change screen brightness etc menu>settings>power>
While it doesn't invert the colours, Locale can dim the screen and enable and disable various radios etc under various conditions. Couple it with Screen Filter (which inserts itself as an option in Locale but can be used on its own) for an even dimmer backlight if needed.
I also found better battery from XDA to be really handy. Check out your battery and see if the phone is awake when the screen is off. Then use better battery to check wake locks. I found a few apps using this that were turning the phone on and once deleted, i found my batter life increased. I also noticed that XDA has some apps in black to save battery life. Thinks like gmail. Its worth a look
Folks I've just got my Samsung Galaxy S2 after moving from my Desire i'm noticing a couple of things missing after Sense. Does any one know of an app that lets you select how you want the phone to behave when connected to a computer. I need to be able to pick "Charge Only" so I can listen to some music and charge the battery at work.
Not used it, but try "Plug In Launcher" for that. Currently having some fun loading and messing with custom ROMs on my phone - I'm hoping some talented person will get Sandwich working properly on my Defy, as Moto have pretty much ceased support, stopped at Gingerbread which was only released a few months ago...
My plan is to root it before I get too invested in the way it is set up but I didn't get a chance to play this weekend Plug in Launcher is pretty handy in that it'll launch your music app when the headphones are instlalled but it doesn't over ride the mass storage.
Started filling up my Galaxy Nexus with a few things from this thread that I'd forgotten I'd uninstalled from my Desire
The first thing you need to do is root it and install a fresh rom. Everything is faster, more responsive, better batter life and you don't have the crappy apps that come on it. On the S2 its fool proof. I have a custom rom on my desire, my fathers s2 and my brothers tab. My father said the battery life increase with the new rom was huge. Poweramp >>> WinAmp You'll have to buy the key after 30 days, but it's worth it. The main reason I got it over the default music player was because the stock player would shut down if left idle, losing my position in the 4-6 hour DJ sets I often listen to. But it also has the ability to resume on plugging in a headset/headphones and has a plethora of equaliser options. The SGS2 is a great phone, so much so that I ended up getting my girlfriend one as well It's so good that when I tried flashing new ROMs I ended up missing all the stock features that Samsung put in and had to flash back! Oh that's a point, here are some nifty features you may or may not know about: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053751 The thread was started for the SGS1, but they work on the SGS2 as well. In particular there's the screenshot, swiping contacts to call or text, brightness adjustment and the little Easter eggs in the about section
This is a really helpful thread. I'll most likely be getting an android tablet after Christmas so these suggestions are very helpful. Can't believe I forgot about the Bit Tech app!
