no really, i know vodka tends to hold on to low temps for a while and it wont freze, anyone given it any thought or know of any draw backs aside from drinking it all when you shut your system down?

I think that vodka is flamible, that could cause some dammage

In a previous thread, someone recomended windshield wiper fluid, I got a look at a 1 gal container of the stuff (2.99), and it goes to -26 C (0 F)! It contains meathanol alchahol, and has a purdy bl00 color (bet it looks great in UV ;) ).

I think that I saw a project that used rubbing alchahol, but I can't find it

/me slams computer in frustration and watches dents form in the generic beige side pannel

Yeah i tend to agree with the fire statement :D 100 proof vodka is 50% alcohol with would need to burn if something went wrong. But i'm sure it wouldn't stop you guys from trying :p I would think its safer than rubbing alcohol tho..

Forget the windshield wiper stuff ... I used it yesterday to clean my W/C system ... it makes alot of bubbles and throthes ( is that the correct term ? ) when put it a closed line like you find it in Watercooled PCs ... But it cleans out the system pretty well :) you'll have to rinse the whole thing a couple of times though before all the wiper stuff is out and it stops bubbling

    Cheers

I think that you need the stuff minus the soap in order for it to work well ;)

Water has the best thermal absobtion, but freezes at 0C..If you mix in some anti-freeze, you can get colder, but lose some effiency. Vodka would work at transfering heat, but not as well as water. Ethanol isn't all that great. You can use methanol, but its, well, poisionous (vapours, everything), and STILL not as good as pure water.

Here is a good site to check for thermal conductivity, and here if you want to see the lowest temps you can reach with water + glycol (anti-freeze) mixes.

hmm interesting numbers on the heat transfer and look at mercury a thermal conductivity of 8.25 :eeek: no if you could manage to build a system that could handel that and not have to worry about leaks that would OH I DONY KNOW KILL YOU youd get great results. am i right or am i reading the numbers wrong. plus it would look UBER LEET, clear tubes SILVER coolent

    that would be sweet

oh, it would be überleet indeed :D throw in a uv cold cathode, some silver rounded cables..oh baby..then a gasmask for good measure. And yes, you are reading those numbers correctly. Mmm..almost 16x better than water..

We had a mercury spill at my school.. They blocked off the area for a long time, and there were trucks there for a long time. I think they had to dig it up because it sank into the concrete.

Don't get me started on mercury... I almost got my account banned on OcUk because people there were claiming it was nearly as dangerous as Ebola (or something like that) the over-zealous moderators didn't appreciate the method I chose to tell them that they were being anally verbose

Yes mercury's nasty...esp in compounds and gaseous, but as a liquid it's pretty harmless (but heavy!!!!)

actually in liquid form you can still die.. i dont remember but some kids were playing in mercury and they were throwing balls at eachother and i think most of them died.. it can go through your skin. bad stuff.. i thought about the vodka thing.. if theres no air in your watercooling thing, it could be done.. who throws matches into watercooling stuff? the processor wouldnt get hot enough to light the stuff anyway.. but there is always the risk of that.

There was a guy who ran alcohol through his system. It didn't perform well at all.

    I forget the link.
