A 5 Gal container of that stuff is about $10, I think that they'd laff at me if I asked for a sample.

I'll just drain it out of the family car :hehe:

That might be why he has had to replace so many windshields...

I think that he was refeering to the methanol in the fluid, don't they use that in gas? It suposedly is not good for the motor...

Just don't breathe TOO deep :hehe:

The guys at procooling found an alternative to dyelite, here.

    Looks cool!

If you want some hard data about watercooling go to the overclockers.com Cooling forum (sorry bit-tech guys :D )

The main downsides to Ethelyne Glycol (antifreeze) are, as you said, the reduced heat transfer (which I doubt is that great) but more importantly is has a much higher viscosity than water, making your flow rate slower depending on how much you add. Personally, I'm using it in a 1/10 solution and it's working great for keeping corrosion down, though I had to add some Algae killer to keep the little green guys from clogging up the pump. Then again, my water temp is about 30 degrees Celsius (86 deg F) so I don't really have to worry about the whole freezing thing.

Methanol/water has a much lower freezing point than ethelyne glycol/water. However, there are some problems with it. Like ethelyne glycol it reduces heat transfer (again, I doubt too significantly), however it doesn't have a high viscosity. The other problem is the whole flammability thing. You know, where if it leaks and accidently catches on fire, it'll uhh... burn and explode.

Anyway, look at the "Hard Data" post in the Cooling section of the OC.com forums if you want some er... hard data I suppose.

    Hope this helps

Oh also, the main ingredient in that windshield wiper is probably methanol. If you do go that case I definitely recommend NOT using windshield wiper fluid and just procuring some pure methanol--you never know when they may put a semi-corrosive chemical in there that could wreak havoc.

    Welcome to the forum manticore.

No probs recommending other sourses of infor. lots of forum members are members of more than one forum, its how we get good information.:)

Haddy and Yo-dah, before you take the piss, remember that windscreem fluid is contained in a non metalic environment. Though washing over will cause no problems, I know it is recommeded that you do not store it in aluminium due to the effects of constant exposure.:eyebrow:

How about brass, copper, and plexi? would it cause problems with those materials?

[GIB] Spawney, I'm eagerly awaiting those pics :cooldude:

    Very odd this?

Just the water wetter (or purple ice) at the correct percentages in distilled water has always been good for me over 12 months use of a swiftech setup (complete with dissimilar metals). No algae build-up either. I think the antifreeze reference originated when ppl first read the labels of the additives which were for auto use after all. Antifreeze, as Manticore says actually inhibits the heat transfer, if the Water Wetter website is to be believed.

I have plans for cooling that may very well dip below 0 C, and require a coolant that can do so without freezing

I've heard stuff about antifreeze inhibiting the cooling properties of water, but windsheild washer fluid only inhibites it a little bit.

I am just asking if this stuff is going to corode my waterblock(s), resavour, and fittings away.

Visit this page to learn some more about watercooling at below 0 temps. Tiger is a very smart guy, and his stuff can be very informative.

Again, don't use windshield wiper, use a methanol/water mix if you do (which is the same thing without the useless windshield additives)

You can get the fluid without soap and stuff in it, I've seen it at the auto store.

    Good link, BTY.
